Serum carbohydrate antigen 242 expression exerts crucial function in the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer

Abstract: Pancreatic cancer has the worst prognosis of any gastrointestinal cancer, with the mortality approaching the incidence. Early detection is crucial for improving patients' prognosis. CA242 has been widely reported to play a role in diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. However, published data on this subject are inconclusive. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the diagnostic value of CA242 in pancreatic cancer. We searched all the eligible studies through PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library data… Show more

“…Because of its high positivity and sensitivity, it is often used for clinical diagnosis, which is of great clinical value for the diagnosis and prognosis of pancreatic cancer [13]. CA125 is a macromolecular glycoprotein, and it has been [14], and thus CA125 has been used for pancreatic cancer diagnosis. CEA was derived from epithelial tissue in endoderm, mostly present in the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, respiratory tract, etc., and it is often used clinically for the diagnosis of digestive system tumor [15].…”

“…CA 242, a carbohydrate antigen, is considered a useful biomarker in PC since high serum CA 242 concentrations have been significantly associated with the diagnosis of PC ( 7 ). Even if there is not an elevation of CA 242 in serum in conditions such as acute pancreatitis or cholestasis (unlike CA19-9), positive CA 242 has been demonstrated not only in PC but also in colon cancer ( 8 ).…”

“…With newly emerging proteomic methods such as mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, free flow electrophoresis and gel electrophoresis, combinations of these techniques have been used to identify biomarkers based on serum proteomics CA242, osteopontin and macrophage inhibitory cytokine 1 (MIC‐1) are only some of the biomarkers that tend to be potentially effective. However, carbohydrate antigen 19–9 (CA 19–9) is still currently the only serum biomarker which has been widely used for detection of PDAC; however, this approach is frustrating in regard to both specificity and sensitivity .…”
