Serum biomarkers associated with SARS-CoV-2 severity

Abstract: Immunity with SARS-CoV-2 infection during the acute phase is not sufficiently well understood to differentiate mild from severe cases and identify prognostic markers. We evaluated the immune response profile using a total of 71 biomarkers in sera from patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, confirmed by RT-PCR and controls. We correlated biological marker levels with negative control (C) asymptomatic (A), nonhospitalized (mild cases-M), and hospitalized (severe cases-S) groups. Among angiogenesis markers, we ident… Show more

“…The level of cytokines and immunologic dysregulation play a role in the severity of COVID-19 as well as multiple organ failure, respiratory distress syndrome, and septic shock [ 57 , 58 ]. Hospitalized COVID-19 patients with ICU admission have higher plasma levels of IL-2, IL-7, IL-10, G-CSF, IP10, MCP-1, MIP-1A, and TNF compared to non-ICU patients [ 9 ].…”

“…Moreover, levels of IL-2, IL-2R, IL-4, IL-8, IFN- γ , and specifically IL-6 and IL-10 were significantly increased in severe compared to nonsevere cases [ 18 , 51 ]. IL-6 is the primary trigger of CRS inducing the production of CRP by the liver; importantly, previous data showed a significant increase in IL-6 and CRP in severely ill patients [ 24 , 37 , 51 ] and thus predicted fatal outcomes [ 57 ]. In this study, we did not detect a significant difference in IL-6 levels (pro-inflammatory cytokine) between ICU and non-ICU admitted patients.…”

“…At the same time, in Deer-RECs, there is also an upregulation of VEGFA (0.60 log 2 FC) and HBEGF (0.34 log 2 FC) (Supplementary Data), which are associated with enhancing compensatory lung growth through paracrine signaling 62 . However, in human cases, the upregulation of serum biomarkers VEGFA and HBEGF was associated with the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection 63 .…”

“…However, challenges and limitations exist, such as the absence of a consensus on universally predictive biomarkers across diverse populations and setting. (3). Therefore, understanding the disease's pathogenesis and finding appropriate biomarkers to know the severity of the patient's condition is crucial in mitigating its harmful health consequences.…”
