Serum Biochemical Reference Values for Adult and Non-adult Chinese Alligators during the Deep and Late Hibernation Periods

Abstract: Background: The Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) is a critically endangered species. Due to the rapid growth of the captive population, the susceptibility to disease during the recovery period after winter hibernation, especially in young alligators, have detrimentally affected Chinese alligator populations. Serum biochemistry, which relates to metabolism, nutritional status and disease, is enormously helpful in evaluating physical conditions in reptile. Many studies have reported the serum biochemical r… Show more

“…Plasma/serum concentrations of total protein are similarly low in reptiles [Crocodilia: 5.83 g dL –1 ; Testudines: 4.46 g dL –1 , Squamata: 5.01 g dL –1 ] ( Dessauer, 1970 ). Moreover, in recent studies, plasma/serum albumin concentrations are low [e.g., Chinese alligators: 2.2 g dL –1 ( Tang et al, 2018 ); American alligators: 1.1 g dL –1 ( Hamilton et al, 2016 )]. There is a corollary to changes in albumen etc.…”

“…The hydroxy polynuclear aluminum (mark as PA) as the intermediate product of the hydrolysispolymerization course of aluminum solutions is the preferred coagulant in dealing with various industry and municipal waste water especially potable water, having shown right smart superiority in the domain of water treatment, and presenting a good development foreground [1,2]. At present, two kinds of quantitative test methods of PA species are generally adopted: one is the Al-Ferron timed spectrophotometry assay improved by Smith [3]; the other is 27 Al-NMR method putted forward by Akitt et al [4].…”

“…Namely, the 27 Al-NMR can not differentiate a series of or all PA species [5], actually, a lot of polynuclear Al species can't be detected by this method because of its spectral line spreading and the disturbance of background. The species that 27 Al-NMR tests is only occupied one part of total aluminum (Al T ) under many circumstances [1]. It also makes its popularization and application restricted because the NMR instrument is expensive and the test means is trivial.…”
