Serum antibodies to oral Bacteroides asaccharolyticus (Bacteroides gingivalis): relationship to age and periondontal disease

Abstract: E(H) 8, p. 79], it was shown that immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibodies reactive with autoclave extracts of oral strains of B. melaninogenicus subsp. intermedius or B. asaccharolyticus could be detected in the sera of periodontally normal children and adults. The levels of antibody in these normal sera reactive with B. melaninogenicus subsp. intermedius were distinctly higher than those reactive with B. asaccharolyticus. In these pilot studies, it was also shown that patients with adult periodontitis had h… Show more

“…This situation is 6MS. to fact that most of the members of the oral flora associated with chronic inflammatory periodontal disease states can be identified in healthy subjects (Loesche & Syed 1978, Loesche et al 1985, and that antibody titers to this flora appears in adolescence (Mouton et al 1981) and can be demonstrated in health (Doty et al 1982).…”

“…Hofstad 1984, Naito et al 1985, Tew et al 1985a. Other studies have shown that antibodies to many of these species appear normally in the sera during maturation from the neonate to the adolescent (Mouton et al 1981). Thus, ••preinfection" sera do not usually exist and "normal" antibody titers to these microorganisms vary considerably.…”

“…As discussed by Ebersole et al (1985), a major consideration of many studies is that the diseases are treated as static phenomena and do nol consider the apparent cyclical nature of disease progression described by Goodson et al (1982). Mouton et al (1981) described the increase in serum antibody reactive with B. gingivalis in adult periodontitis patients and in patients with the generalized form of juvenile periodontitis. Tew et al (1985) found that subjects with severe periodontitis were, most often, seropositive for Eubacterium brachy.…”

“…Most attempts to date have centered on elucidation of humoral immunity by studying antibody levels in diseased patients when compared to healthy controls (Mouton et al 1981. Ranney et al, 1982, Schonfeld & Kagan 1982.…”

“…Bacteriological studies revealed that certain gram-negative bacteria are related to the etiology and pathophysioiogy of various types of periodontitis (Socransky 1977, Slots 1979, Jacob et al 1982, Tew et al 1985b, Page & Schroder 1982, Furthermore, immunological studies using various methods have been carried out, based on an assumption that local bacterial infection elicits the host immune responses being involved in the etiology of periodontal diseases (Altman 1982), Mouton et al, (1981) and Ebersole et al (1980) first applied the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which was developed by Fngvall and Perlemann (1972), to the field of periodontics. Using this technique, studies of serum antibodies against periodontopathic bacteria have been performed.…”
