Serum and bronchial lavage fluid concentrations of IL-8, SLPI, sCD14 and sICAM-1 in patients with COPD and asthma

Abstract: Our findings point to the importance of selecting a correct biological fluid when analyzing specific biomarkers, and also show that of 4 measured biomarkers, only the BAL IL-8 was higher in COPD patients when compared to asthma.

“…49 IL-8 in BAL fluid was significantly higher than serum and also higher in patients with asthma compared with patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 52 In contrast, in children, IL-8 levels in BAL were found to be similar to normal controls. 53 Increased tissue and BAL neutrophils have also been linked to increases in matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in tissue and BAL fluid.…”

“…SLPI is recognized as a member of the whey acidic protein four-disulfide core family, and is abundantly produced by epithelial cells, neutrophils and macrophages in the digestive, respiratory and reproductive tracts (52). The SLPI level is higher and is negatively correlated with FEV/FVC in patients with COPD (53). A prospective study proposed that the expression of TIMP-1 in exhaled breath condensate is higher in patients with stable COPD (54).…”

“…sputum and BALF, in patients with COPD was higher than those in asthmatics [28,65,71,77,78]. The evaluation of BALF reveals more differences in biochemical features of airways inflammation in two diseases than that of induced sputum [28]. In contrast to IL-8, the expression of several T cells attracting chemokines, such as CXCL10, CCL17 and CCL22, in the epithelium was not significantly different between asthma and COPD, but significantly higher than nonsmokers [53].…”
