Serum 8-isoprostane levels in patients with resistant oral lichen planus before and after treatment with lycopene: a randomized clinical trial

Abstract: Background Oral lichen planus is an autoimmune disease in which topical steroids are the first line of treatment. The adverse effects of systemic corticosteroids prescribed for resistant oral lichen planus cases advocate alternative modalities. Lycopene is an antioxidant with a wide range of beneficial properties. This trial aimed to evaluate the effect of pure lycopene as compared to systemic corticosteroids (Prednisolone) on the symptoms, signs and oxidative stress in patients with erosive or… Show more

“…Lycopene (from natural tomato extract), when administered through soft gel capsules to patients with erosive OLP recalcitrant to topical steroids, were demonstrated to decrease serum 8-isoprostane levels. This effect manifested as reduction of the size of oral red lesions, regression of their severity, and conversion of erosions and ulcers to erythema or to disappearance [ 74 ]. Kushwaha et al [ 75 ] also conducted a clinical trial where they report lycopene capsules effective on the management and prevention of OLP lesions through the complete or partial remission of lesions.…”

“…Due to considerable prevalence of psoriasis in general population, as well as comorbidities related to psoriasis, new therapeutic modalities are constantly being investigated. In patients with severe cases of psoriasis in which established therapeutic procedures did not give desired results, the application of cell therapy is being examined, which includes the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) [ 82 , 83 ]. In addition to the fact that mesenchymal cell therapy brings the possibility of a complete recovery of patients with psoriasis, there are also a number of possible adverse effects that reduce the aspiration for their use.…”

“…A review published by Nosratzehi (2018) summarized that peroxidation products and antioxidants were potential biomarkers for predicting OLP, and antioxidants might serve as potential treatments. In addition, two more clinical studies showed that using antioxidants could significantly improve the clinical symptoms and signs of patients with OLP and reduce the levels of peroxidation biomarkers ( Qataya et al, 2020 ; Eita et al, 2021 ). Therefore, this study aimed to comprehensively analyze previous findings on OLP treatment and systematically review whether antioxidant had treatment effects on patients with OLP.…”
