Serum 8-isoprostane levels and paraoxonase 1 activity in patients with stage I multiple myeloma

Abstract: A decrease in PON1 activity and increase in 8-isoprostane serum activities in patients may indicate the importance of lipid peroxidation in MM disease. Oxidative stress and especially lipid peroxidation could reduce the antioxidant activity of PON1 and ARE in MM patients and could be considered as factors in the pathogenesis of MM disease.

“…Elevated levels of 8-OHdG with increase in serum nitrate and nitrite levels may be related with reduction in antioxidant defense system. The results of the present study are in accordance with previous studies, which mentioned the impairment of the anti-oxidant enzymes in MM disease (38). This reduction may be associated with silencing several genes related with the expression of antioxidant genes.…”

“…Estimated serum levels of antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD1), glutathione peroxidase, catalase and vitamins C and E were lower, whereas serum levels of oxidative stress markers (including malondialdehyd and advanced oxidation protein products) were higher in multiple myeloma patients compared to healthy individuals [38-42]. Accordingly, activities of antioxidants preventing lipid peroxidation such as paraoxonase (PON1) and arylesterase (ARE) were lower in multiple myeloma patient sera [43,44]. Levels of 8-isoprostane, a product of fatty acid peroxidation, were on the contrary higher in multiple myeloma patients [43].…”
