Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Concentrations Are Associated with Computed Tomography Markers of Subclinical Interstitial Lung Disease among Community-Dwelling Adults in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

Abstract: Vitamin D deficiency is independently associated with subclinical ILD and its progression, based on both increased HAAs and ILAs, in a community-based population. Further studies are needed to examine whether vitamin D repletion can prevent ILD or slow its progression. The MESA cohort design is registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00005487.

“…Low levels of serum 25(OH)VD have been associated with subclinical interstitial lung disease and COPD [10][11][12][13]. Although both 25(OH)VD insufficiency and AATD are extensively linked to decreased lung function, no study has investigated the relationship between 25(OH)VD and AAT levels.…”

“…Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) related autoantibodies and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide have been associated with ILA among smokers and rheumatoid factor IgA are associated with ILA regardless of smoking history [ 46 ]. Lastly, vitamin D deficiency and the use of hydrophilic HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) has been linked with ILA, while the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid is negatively associated with ILA [ 44 , 47 , 48 ].…”

“…Similarly, another RA-related autoantibody, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide, has been associated with HAA in the subgroup of smokers [ 46 ]. As with ILA, vitamin-D deficiency has been associated with HAA and HAA progression [ 47 ] and HAA have been related to lower HDL-C, ApoA-1, and serum adipokines [ 43 , 80 ]. Amounts of rice in diet, a proposed surrogate for arsenic exposure among urban residents, have been associated with HAA while an association with ILA was not shown [ 81 ].…”
