Serous effusions in Burkitt lymphomas: a report of two paediatric cases with review of literature

Abstract: The serosal cavity can be involved in many diseases, both benign and malignant. Such involvement is secondary to occurrence of disease at other sites. Lymphoma, although not a very common cause for serous effusion, is one of the most important one. The reason for serosal involvement in lymphomas has not been fully elucidated. These two cases highlight the importance of pleural and peritoneal fluid examination in the diagnosis of lymphoma. There is correlation between fluid examination and subsequent cytologica… Show more

“…Only a handful of studies and case reports of BL involving serous effusions have been described in literature. [2][3][4][5] Rapid diagnosis of BL is crucial as it is considered as an oncological emergency on account of its high proliferation rate and risk of tumour lysis syndrome. Cytological examination of body fluids along with ancillary studies can aid in differentiating BL from effusions showing reactive lymphoid cells and other lymphomas involving fluids.…”

“…Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive form of B‐cell non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), which can rarely involve body fluids and can present with serous effusions. Only a handful of studies and case reports of BL involving serous effusions have been described in literature 2–5 . Rapid diagnosis of BL is crucial as it is considered as an oncological emergency on account of its high proliferation rate and risk of tumour lysis syndrome.…”
