“…Conclusive results in genetic studies involving ECT have been challenging because of small sample sizes, variations in ethnic group, different end‐point measures, ECT doses/parameters or adjunct anaesthetics and heterogeneous phenotype definitions. Also, several studies (Huuhka et al ., ; Anttila et al ., ; Huuhka et al ., ; Anttila et al ., ; Huuhka et al ., ; Huuhka et al ., ; Anttila et al ., ; Viikki et al ., ; Viikki et al ., ; Viikki et al ., ; Kautto et al ., ) appear to have exploited the same sample for the investigation of different genetic variants not, however, applying correction for multiple testing across studies which in fact would reduce the number of positive findings (Table 1). Importantly, many patients involved in the ECT genetic studies described in this review, more often than not, had received concomitant psychopharmacotherapy.…”

“…A haplotype analysis of serotonin 2A (5-HT2A; HTR2A) receptor polymorphisms rs7997012 and rs6311 in 119 patients with TRD revealed no significant association with changes in MADRS score after ECT alone, but the interaction between polymorphisms and gender explained 14% of the variance in MADRS score changes (Viikki et al, 2011). Similarly, a study in 119 Finnish patients with TRD showed that patients with the combined 5-HTTLPR ll and norepinephrine transporter (NET) 182TT (rs2242446) genotypes displayed a poorer treatment response to ECT (Kautto et al, 2015).…”

“…Serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) and norepinephrine transporter (NET182C) polymorphisms have been suggested to be associated with ECT treatment response. 81) However, studies conducted on rodents in past using radio-ligands or measuring serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) release have provided ambiguous results regarding effect of ECS on receptor sensitivity. 82) Findings of human studies measuring post ECT blunting of cortisol response over 5-HT 1A receptor agonist treatment were also contradicting.…”
