“…Following this trend, investigating the rCBF with 99m Tc-ECD-SPECT has previously been performed in dogs suffering from impulsive aggression, pathological anxiety, and compulsive behavior (Peremans et al, 2003;Vermeire et al, 2009Vermeire et al, , 2012. In future studies, it will be interesting as well to look at a possible correlation between normalization of the rCBF and clinical improvement in those dogs after medical treatment and/or after behavior therapy.…”

“…In cases with considerable risk of danger, pharmacological treatment is essential. Satisfactory results had been achieved with risperidone in dogs for diminishing behavioral arousal and in sociopathy stage 1 when the warning phases are still complete, social directed regression, sociopathies, impulsive aggression and hallucinatory type signs with considerable safety [16][17][18]34] . Our results are concordant with previous work.…”

“…Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic, is a serotonin type 2 (5-HT 2 ) and dopaminergic D 2 receptor antagonist with high potency, also used in human medicine in schizophrenia, bipolar mania and irritability associated with autistic disorder [16] . In dogs it is proposed for diminishing behavioral arousal and in sociopathy stage 1 when the warning phases are still complete, social directed regression, sociopathies, impulsive aggression, hallucinatory type signs [17] , with considerable safety [16][17][18] , but there is not much literature on the clinical therapeutic results in dog aggression.…”

“…Rudy's work on this subject (De Meester et al, 2008, 2011, including the paper in this issue (Santos et al, 2013) was detailed and meticulous, and is a cautionary tale for those seeking simple tests with guaranteed outcomes. Whether Rudy was working on humane considerations for dogs, or on cutting edge imaging studies of assessments of canine behavioral pathology (Vermeire et al, 2009a(Vermeire et al, ,b, 2012 he devoted himself to the project at hand and to his colleagues. Rudy was one of the first European vets who befriended me when I began to lecture outside of the USA, and I will forever be indebted for his interest in and care of me during the times we spent together.…”
