Seroprevalence of Toxocara Canis In Asthmatic Children and its Relation to the Severity of Diseases

Abstract: Background:Toxocariasis is a common parasitic infectionworldwide even in developed countries. Through this health problem, the immune system is triggered and the antibody is produced, leading to some hypersensitive situations like asthma. In the present study, we tried to show a correlation between Toxocara Canis (T. canis) seropositivityand asthma in Isfahan city. Methods:This research is a cross-sectional study involving 40 asthmatics and 46 non-asthmatic cases aged 2-18 years. In all cases, T. canis IgG leve… Show more

“…In contrast to our study, several studies have reported a statistically significant difference between the seroprevalence of Toxocara infection among asthmatic and healthy children ( 6 , 10 , 11 ). Cobzaru et al ( 8 ) reported toxocariasis in asthma patients and control group 68.42% and 13.63%, respectively, and this difference was significant.…”

“…The findings of our study regarding the seroprevalence of toxocariasis in asthmatic and healthy children were consistent with the results of several studies where no significant difference in Toxocara seropositivity was observed between the two groups ( 11 , 14 16 , 19 ). In a study ( 18 ), the seroprevalence of toxocariasis was higher in asthmatic children as compared to the healthy control, but there was no statistically significant association between seropositivity to Toxocara and risk of asthma in children.…”

“…Also, in a cross-sectional study, the odds ratio of toxocariasis was 1.73% in asthmatic children (15). Recently, in a case-control study in central Iran, the seroprevalence of Toxocara antibodies was 45% in asthmatic patients and 21.7% in controls (P = 0.02) (16).…”

“…The pulmonary toxo-cariasis was with asthma like symptoms [12] . The plausible role of parasitic infections as a trigger or a cause of asthma is not well investigated [13] . However, toxocariasis has been proposed as a probable etiology of asthma [14][15] .…”
