The article explores the competence of students majoring in early childhood education at teacher education universities in Vietnam in terms of implementing STEAM education based on self-assessment. The results of a survey of early childhood education students in their third and fourth (final) years at three universities in different provinces/cities of Vietnam show that students rated themselves as meeting all or most of the requirements of STEAM education for children. The students did not rate themselves as unsatisfactory or slightly satisfactory in any aspect. In terms of the specific aspects of competence, the students rated themselves as meeting all of the requirements for content related to the "professional qualities and ethics expressed in the organization of STEAM education" and rated themselves as meeting the majority of the requirements for items related to "knowledge and skills for organizing STEAM education for children," which had the lowest mean scores. Therefore, universities and other stakeholders need to promote the effectiveness of the training they provide to enable such students to further develop their competence in STEAM education for preschool children, especially in terms of knowledge and skills in organizing STEAM educational activities for children. Differences in the competence levels of students from different universities also require further attention.

Objective: To assess the magnitude of active and recovering COVID-19 patients among at-risk communities and to identify the factors associated with positive serology. Methods: Four hundred and eighty-three close contacts of COVID-19 patients residing in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, during the fourth wave of the COVID-19 epidemic (September and October 2021) were included. Five weeks after exposure to a COVID-19 patient, they underwent a serology test using the BIOSYNEX COVID-19 BSS kit. Results: The median age of participants was 37 years. A total of 34.6% individuals presented at least one clinical symptom between the time of contact with the COVID-19 patient and inclusion in study. A total of 1.7% unvaccinated individuals tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 using real-time PCR, and 9.5% had evidence of recent infection (positive PCR and/or IgM). A further 26.7% unvaccinated individuals presented evidence of a past infection (positive IgG only). Socio-demographic characteristics, vaccination status and clinical symptoms were not associated with a positive IgM test. Conclusion:This is the first serosurvey conducted during the fourth wave of the epidemic in Vietnam. It revealed a seropositivity rate higher than in previous studies and confirmed the hyperendemicity of SARS-CoV-2. Testing using rapid serological tests proved to be a reliable, easy-to-use method and enabled a rapid estimation of the burden of COVID-19.

The authors surveyed the seroprevalence of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in Vietnam in 2020 and considered the positives in plaque reduction neutralization tests (PRNT) as SARS-CoV-2 infection. SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies were identified in two blood donors in samples collected in 2020 (N 5 885; 0.23%; 95% confidence interval: 0.06-0.82).We have comments on this finding. The PRNT is considered specific unless there is a cross-reactivity from neutralizing antibodies to other coronaviruses. Antibodies to seasonal common cold coronaviruses (CCC; 229E, NL63, HKU1, or OC43) might cross-react with SARS-CoV-2. A study reported that two of 40 CCC convalescent sera had inconclusive results in a SARS-CoV-2 micro-focus reduction neutralization test. 2 Another study showed SARS-CoV-2 PRNT titers of 1:20 and 1:10 for OC43 and 229E convalescent sera, respectively. 3 The authors conducted the PRNT for 46 pre-pandemic stored sera and found no positive result. The false-positive rate was 0%, but the 95% confidence interval was 0 to 7.7%. As already mentioned, PRNT for SARS-CoV-2 could show cross-reactivity to anti-CCC antibodies, and therefore, the false-positive rate should be determined accurately. In this case, the number of positive results should be statistically different between pre-pandemic (2017) and post-pandemic (2020) samples. To verify this point, we analyzed the rates by Fisher's exact test (Table 1), which showed no significant difference in SARS-CoV-2 positivity between the two sample sets (P 5 0.90). The number of controls is apparently too small to provide adequate power to evaluate the difference. In our previous study, 400 pre-pandemic samples were assayed by lateral flow assay and ELISA and showed 1.5% and 1.8% SARS-CoV-2 positives, respectively. 4 We think that the results in the paper by Nguyen et al. should be interpreted with caution. In particular, it should be noted that the seroprevalence in a low-prevalence situation of COVID-19 would be biased by the specificity of the test.
