Seroprevalence of influenza D virus in bulls in Argentina

Abstract: Influenza D virus (IDV) is considered a new agent involved in bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Based on seroprevalence studies or isolation from clinical samples, this virus has been detected on several continents and in several animal species, including cattle, pigs, camel, horses, and goats. We used an indirect in-house ELISA to detect anti-IDV antibodies in 165 serum samples from bulls on 116 farms in the province of La Pampa, Argentina. Eighty-five of 116 (73%) farms had at least 1 positive animal, and 11… Show more

“…States the overall IDV seroprevalence in cattle was 77.5% nationally, ranging from 47.7% to 84.6% depending on the region (Silveira et al, 2019), whereas in South America 73% of tested farms had at least one positive animal (Alvarez et al, 2020). The infection seems less extended in cattle in African countries (Salem et al, 2017) (Fusade-Boyer et al, 2020 than in Europe or America.…”

“…If we accept that some antibodies become denatured during storage, which does not seem to be the case for toxoplasma serum antibodies over at least 6 y, 1 we would have found false-negative results or, more probably, slightly lower OD values than without denaturation. That information could have been incorporated in the discussion in our manuscript.…”

“…On 18 June 2020, Alvarez et al published their article titled “Seroprevalence of influenza D virus in bulls in Argentina.” 1 It is an interesting work in which the authors evaluated the influenza D virus (IDV) seroprevalence rates in bulls in the province of La Pampa, Argentina. Despite its strengths and scientific value, some technical issues should be further considered and discussed.…”

“…Globally, IDV has also been identified in China, 7 Japan, 8 France, 9 Italy, 10 Argentina, 11 Turkey, 12 Kenya, Morocco, Togo, and Benin 13 . A high density of animal farms and markets, limited public health resources, and variation in biosecurity measures make Vietnam an ideal location for the propagation of novel zoonoses like IDV.…”
