Seroprevalence of hepatitis B among pregnant women in Varna Region, Bulgaria

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen among pregnant women in Varna Region, Bulgaria. During the period 2009-2013, an average prevalence of 2.26% (95%CI 1.75, 2.91) was measured in a total number of 2,700 samples. Analysis demonstrated that rural residence and minority ethnic origin are important risk factors for hepatitis B infection among pregnant women with hazard ratios of 2.40 (95%CI 1.46, 3.94), and 2.43 (95%CI 1.46, 4.05) when compared with urban reside… Show more

“…The prevalence of HBsAg in our study is alike in the studies reported in Libya 1.5%, in Algeria 1.6% [17], in Mexico 1.65% [18], in Amritsar (India) 1.19% [19], in Isfahan (Iran) (1.56%) [20] and in Bulgaria 2.26% [21]. However, the prevalence of HBsAg in the present study is higher than the studies reported in Lorestan West of Iran (0.7%) [22], in India (0.9%) [23], in Punjab (Northern India) (1.1%) [24], and in Peshawar, Pakistan (1.16%) [25].…”

“…39 In contrast, higher seroprevalence of HBV was observed in similar study populations in different parts of the world. For instance; the current study finding is considerably higher than other previous study reports such as: 2.26% from Bulgaria, 40 2.78% from Pakistan, 41 2.04% from India, 42 4.6% from Nigeria 43 and 3.5% from Dawuro, Southern Ethiopia. 26 These differences in the seroprevalence might be due to differences in cultural and behavioral characteristics of the pregnant women.…”

“…The prevalence of serological markers of HBV among participants aged 30–39 years was two times higher than the prevalence in those aged 18–29 years. The same trend was observed for anti-HBc in the Moscow region [ 11 ] and for HBsAg among pregnant women in Bulgaria [ 30 ], but it was not observed in surveys from Nigeria, China, India, and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic [ 16 , 31 , 32 , 33 ].…”
