Seroprevalence of Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii in Urban and Rural Dogs in Turkey

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The seroprevalence of Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii was investigated in stray urban dogs and shepherd and farm guard dogs from rural areas sampled from 10 provinces of Turkey. Sera from 855 dogs were examined for the presence of anti-B. vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii antibodies by indirect fluorescent antibody test. Overall, 56 (6.6%) of the 855 dogs examined, including 16 (3%) of the 522 stray dogs and 40 (12%) of the 333 rural dogs, were seropositive. This is the first report on prevalence of a… Show more

“…Also, 1/19 Greek dogs with monocytic ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia canis) were B. vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii seroreactive, suggesting an exposure history to this subspecies (Mylonakis et al, 2004), as also reported from nearby Turkey (Celebi et al, 2010). Recent findings indicated that B. rochalimae may be much more widely distributed throughout the world than previously documented.…”

“…berkhoffii genotype II and less frequently genotype I DNA [19]. To our knowledge, human infection with B. vinsonii genotype III has not been reported from North America, whereas this genotype has been identified in dogs and humans in several Mediterranean countries, including Spain [18,45,46]. Interestingly, the genotype III was also documented in military working dogs with endocarditis imported to the United States from Europe [47].…”

“…4 Infection is usually more prevalent in stray dogs, which are frequently infested by fleas and/or ticks. 2 In the Middle East, a few studies have reported the presence of Bartonella in dogs in Israel, 5,6 Turkey, 7,8 and Iraq. 9 However, no information on Bartonella infection in humans or animals is available from Iran, besides a few studies in cats from Tehran 10,11 and Shahrekord.…”
