Seroprevalence and Incidence of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in a Rural Ugandan Population

Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine in a rural population the age- and sex-specific prevalence and incidence rates of serological reactivity of 5 common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their association with HIV-1 antibody status. Of the adult population of two villages (529 adults aged 15 years or more) 294 provided an adequate blood specimen both on enrollment and at 12 months. The sera were tested at 3 collaborating laboratories for antibodies against HIV-1, Treponema pallidum, Haemophilus ducrey… Show more

“…HSV-1 is invariably acquired during early childhood in many locations. For example, despite the nearly universal presence of HSV-1 antibodies, HSV-2 seroprevalences in Africa are among the highest in the world (92,284). Similar data have been obtained in Mexico (55).…”

“…Prevalence of HSV-2 was higher than in earlier rural population studies in Uganda (Rakai, Masaka) 19,20 . The Uganda national sero-behavioral survey done in 2004-5 showed similar prevalence of HSV-2 21 with a different a serological test and low syphilis..…”

“…48 In the population based study in Masaka, Uganda, the initial phase showed high levels of HSV seropositivity-57% in men and 74% in women but an OR for association with HIV infection of only 1.2. 61 However, in a later phase of the study the RR of HSV incidence was 3.7 in HIV positive cases versus HIV negative and HIV prevalence was strongly associated with HSV-2. 41 While this study did not examine the relation between HIV incidence and HSV-2 incidence, the population risk of HIV attributable to genital herpes is likely to be considerable given that recurrent episodes of genital ulceration are common.…”
