Seroprevalence and distribution of leptospirosis serovars among wet market workers in northeastern, Malaysia: a cross sectional study

Abstract: BackgroundLeptospirosis is a zoonotic disease associated with occupations which exposed workers to environments contaminated with urine of infected animals. The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of leptospirosis among wet market workers in Kelantan.MethodsA cross sectional study was conducted in two main wet markets in Kelantan and 232 wet market workers were randomly selected. Blood samples were analysed for microscopic agglutination test (MAT) against 20 live leptospirosis reference… Show more

“…The serological prevalence reported in the present study is much lower when compared to several other tropical countries for example 38.5% among Indian mine workers ( Parveen et al., 2016 ), 33.6% among wet market workers from Kuantan, Malaysia ( Ab Rahman et al., 2018 ), 34.8% among municipal service workers in Selangor, Malaysia ( Samsudin et al., 2015 ), 15.8% among fishing communities in Tanzania ( Mgode et al., 2019 ). However, in the United states of America, only 2.5% of veterinarians were reported to be serologically positive ( Whitney et al., 2009 ).…”

“…Farm workers, fishermen, sewage workers, miners and veterans were found to be the highest-risk groups for leptospirosis from earlier studies ( Ab Rahman et al., 2018 ; Joshi et al., 2017 ; Mgode et al., 2019 ; Parveen et al., 2016 ; Samsudin et al., 2015 ; Whitney et al., 2009 ), while we found livestock farmers (2.7%) as the most leptospiral sero-prevalent group.…”

“…Additionally, although intense focus in the wake of the pandemic has been put on wet markets as a purely Chinese phenomenon, wet markets can in fact be found all over the worldalbeit within differential sociocultural contexts that may impinge on pathogen emergence. This is especially the case in areas with high biodiversity (Uhart et al, 2012), despite research tending to centre around those in Asian contexts (Nhung et al, 2018;Rahman et al, 2018;Ribas et al, 2016). This goes a little way to understanding the biocultural placement of the outbreak, both within its local context and the wider context of markets as biocultural nexuses of pathogen emergence and divergence.…”
