Brucellosis is considered an economically important highly contagious and zoonotic bacterial disease of water buffaloes. Control of brucellosis in buffaloes is very important for public health. The efficacy of control program depends on the detection and eradication of infected animals coupled with vaccination and application of biosecurity. This study was carried out to control the brucellosis in buffalo farm in Assuit Governorate, Egypt during the period from April 2015 to August 2016. Out of 620 unvaccinated buffaloes, 87 (14.03%) aborted. Moreover, 90/620(14.51%), 82/620(13.22%), 82/620(13.22%), and 80/620 (12.9%) buffaloes were serologically positive by BAPA, RBPT, m SAT and Riv.T, respectively. Three isolates were differentiated as Brucella melitensis, biovar 3, one strain isolated from one vaginal swap out of 10 Riv.T. positive recently aborted buffaloes (10%) and two strains were isolated out of ten milk samples of Riv.T. positive buffaloes (20%). Eighty serological positive buffaloes to Riv.T were culled from the herd, while 60 serological negative heifers were vaccinated by Brucella abortus S 19 vaccine, with a dose of 3-8×109 cfu/5ml and monitored for serological titer for 240 days. After 6 months of vaccination, the number of serologically positive calves declined marginally to 50 (83.33%), 40 (66.67%), 50 (83.33%), 0 (0%), 40 (66.67%) and 0 (0%) by BAPA, RBPT, mSAT, CFT, iELISA and cELISA, respectively. Three successive serological tests every three weeks were done by screening tests, BAPA and RBPT and confirmed by Riv.T. At the end of the control program, all examined buffaloes were serologically negative. Application of biosecurity in the farm was applied by the sanitary disposal of aborted material and application of proper disinfectants at its recommended work strength and contact time.

Detecção de anticorpo anti-Brucella sp. e anti-Leptospira spp. em búfalos (Bubalus bubalis) abatidos em matadouro na cidade de Belém, Pará Detection of antibody anti-Brucella sp. and anti-Leptospira spp. in buffalos (Bubalus bubalis) slaughtered in a slaughterhouse in the city of Belém, Pará RESUMO: Este estudo teve como objetivo detectar a presença de búfalos soro reagentes para Brucella sp. e Leptospira spp. Foram utilizadas amostras de soro de 113 animais provenientes da Ilha do Marajó, abatidos em matadouro frigorífico na cidade de Belém-PA, as quais foram submetidas ao teste de soroaglutinação rápida em placa com Antígeno Acidificado Tamponado (AAT) e a prova 2-Mercaptoetanol (2-ME) para a pesquisa de anticorpos contra Brucella sp. e ao Teste de Aglutinação Microscópica (MAT) para pesquisa de aglutininas contra Leptospira spp. Das 113 amostras analisadas, 13,3% (15/113) foram reagentes para anticorpos de Brucella sp. no AAT e 6,1% (7/113) foram confirmada na prova de 2-ME. Para Leptospira spp., 35,4% (40/113) dos bubalinos foram reagentes com o sorovar Hardjo C.T.G., presente em 75% (30/40) das reações. Foram detectados anticorpos contra os agentes pesquisados, demostrando a necessidade de se fazer um controle sanitário mais eficiente no rebanho.

Water buffalo is an indispensable livestock in Asia and other countries due to its high meat and milk quality, aside from draft power source. It adapts well to tropical climate and has significant contribution to the livestock industry, provided with improved breeding and good animal husbandry practices. Infectious diseases are hindrance to good reproductive performance of livestock, resulting in huge economic loss. In addition, most of these diseases are zoonotic, posing serious threats on human health. However, its degree of severity varies in each region and is often overlooked. This chapter reviews the common and current updates on emerging bacterial, viral, protozoal, fungal and endoparasitic pathogens that infect water buffaloes worldwide. All of the diseases directly affect the animals' health condition except for schistosomiasis where water buffalo played an important role as shedder of infection to humans. Leptospirosis, brucellosis, Bovine Tb, BVDV and fasciolosis have projected economic impact to water buffalo industry as well as its effect as zoonoses. However, the data seem underquantified since most are neglected diseases and are highly prevalent in developing countries. Further studies are needed particularly in countries where water buffalo is the major livestock than cattle to fully utilize the potential of the animal.
