Serological responses of patients with lepromatous and tuberculoid leprosy to 30-, 31-, and 32-kilodalton antigens of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Abstract: Sera from patients with lepromatous and tuberculoid leprosy were examined in immunoblot assays for antibodies to Mycobacterium tuberculosis culture filtrate antigens. Antibodies to 30- and 31-kilodalton proteins were present in 88 and 81%, respectively, of 16 patients with lepromatous disease and absent in 16 patients with tuberculoid disease. Antibodies to a 32-kilodalton protein were found in 12 and 38% of lepromatous and tuberculoid patients, respectively. These reactivities may be useful for distinguishing… Show more

“…All of these latest results confirm and extend our previous data (19) and are in agreement with information recently published by others (8,21). On the other hand, a 32-kDa protein, isolated from BCG culture medium and identified as the A component of the BCG 85 complex, was shown to be immunodominant when antibodies were evaluated in active pulmonary TB (12).…”

“…Proteins in the antigen 85 complex have emerged as important antigens in the host response to mycobacteria. Initially, the antigen 85 complex as a whole and then its individual components were found to react with sera from both TB and leprosy patients (29,35). Recent studies have established that purified components, in particular, M. tuberculosis 85A or P32 and M. bovis 85B, are potent T-cell antigens stimulating lymphocyte proliferation and gamma interferon release in TB patients (14,16).…”

“…Twenty-five patienis had received anti-tuberculous chetnothcrapy for at least (Stnonths, Serum was obtained from the remaining patients before initiating treatment. A total of 55 serum samples was obtained from seleeied patients with polar lepromatous (43) or tuberctiloid leprosy (12); patients were classified according to well-established criteria [6], Thirly-onc sera came from patients attending the Hospital Carrasco in Rosario. Argentina, and 26 were from Mexican individuals living in the San Luis Potosi area.…”
