Serological Profiles of Urate, Paraoxonase-1, Ferritin and Lipid in Parkinson’s Disease: Changes Linked to Disease Progression

Abstract: Background: Oxidative stress plays a role in the pathogenesis of neuronal death. Serum levels of urate or lipid were associated with the incidence of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Objective: We compared urate, paraoxonase-1 (PON1), iron, ferritin and lipid in sera of 119 PD patients and 120 healthy controls matched by age, sex and body mass index. We aimed to elucidate whether those serological data are correlated with disease progression. Results: Mean age (SD) of PD patients was 73.4 (8.7) years. Mean Yahr stage… Show more

“…In the current experiment, this insecticide generated a depletion of GSH, in addition to a reduced PON1 activity in brain corroborated with increased lipid peroxidation products, supporting previous reports (Gawad et al, 2004;Zaitone et al, 2012). PON1 enzyme protects membranes against lipid peroxidation being associated with the high density lipoprotein (HDL) (Rosenblat and Aviram, 2009), and was found to be reduced in PD (Ikeda et al, 2011). This unequivocal oxidative state of brain indicates reduction of the cellular antioxidant capacity leading to cell disruption (Drukarch and van Muiswinkel, 2000), mimicking the situation in PD brain (Ilic et al, 1999).…”

“…A Japanese study also found that the serum levels of total cholesterol and LDL-C were significantly reduced in PD patients compared with controls [30]. We speculate that the lower level of lipids in PD may be present prior to the PD diagnosis because premorbid lower lipid status increase PD risk [6][7][8]10,11].To some extent, PD related changes such as motor disability; dyskinesia and diet may also play a little role on the lower level of lipid in PD.…”

“…Generally, environmental factors of diet and exercise influence the levels of these serological factors. Moreover, serum levels of urate, ferritin and lipid have been associated with the progression of other neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease (45)(46)(47) and Alzheimer's disease (48)(49)(50)(51). Thus, nutritional management might be an important and common therapy for slowing progression in patients with neurodegenerative disorders.…”
