Three beta-streptococci serogrouping kits, Phadebact, SeroSTAT, and Streptex, were evaluated as to their sensitivity, accuracy, and suitability as methods for serogrouping streptococci in a clinical microbiology laboratory. The majority of the primary isolates examined by the various methods associated with each of the three kits were correctly identified. The Streptex direct mixed-culture procedure was more often associated with the observation of cross-reactivity than with the direct procedures of the other two kits which did not employ mixed growth cultures. Furthermore, the Streptex kit was associated with more falsenegative responses than those determined by the other two kits under evaluation. These results appeared to be due to the relatively poor sensitivity of the Streptex grouping reagents. The Streptex test procedures required more labor than the other kit procedures, requiring a 1-h enzymatic extraction step for the release of the group antigens. The SeroSTAT kit provided only a direct procedure and, thus, is limited in its application. The Phadebact procedures were the most versatile by providing not only a direct and a 24-h grouping procedure, but also by including a 4-h method that may be employed as required by the clinical microbiologist.

Description of 14 new capsular types of Streptococcus suis

Fourteen new capsular types of Streptococcus suis (types 9 to 22) are described. All reference strains are morphologically and biochemically similar to types previously described. Reference strain types 9 to 13, 15, 16, and 22 were isolated from diseased pigs, whereas types 17 to 19 and 21 came from clinically healthy pigs; type 14 was isolated from a human case of meningitis, and type 20 was isolated from a diseased calf. The group T streptococcus of de Moor has been included in the typing system as type 15. Two-way cross-reactions between types 6 and 16 and a one-way cross-reaction between types 2 and 22 have been demonstrated. In addition, several cross-reactions probably not due to capsular material were detected among different types by using the coagglutination test. This test should not be used alone; weak or multiple positive reactions must be confirmed by the capsular reaction test or the capillary precipitation test. Streptococcus suis is an important swine pathogen isolated in almost all countries where the pig industry is developed. It has been associated mainly with bronchopneumonia and meningitis and less frequently with endocarditis, arthritis, and other infections (2, 10, 18, 19, 25, 26, 28). It is also known to cause meningitis in humans (1, 6, 30). Originally defined as Lancefield groups R, S, RS, and T by de Moor (7), strains of S. suis were later shown to share antigens with group D streptococci (8). A coryneform bacterium, isolated from ratoon stunted sugarcane, has been obtained in pure culture. Its identification by immunological means was investigated. Optimum conditions for the light microscopic observation of bacterial agglutination by specific antiserum, immunofluorescence and the microcapillary haemagglutination of IgG‐sensitized erythrocytes by the bacterium were established. All three assay procedures are simple and rapid. By comparison, more samples can be handled at any one time bythe microcapillary haemagglutination method. Based on bacterial agglutination, the antiserum is specific for the coryneform isolated from ratoon‐stunted sugarcane.
