Serological evidence of Ebola virus exposure in dogs from affected communities in Liberia: A preliminary report

Abstract: Filoviruses such as Ebola virus (EBOV) cause outbreaks of viral hemorrhagic fevers for which no FDA-approved vaccines or drugs are available. The 2014–2016 EBOV outbreak in West Africa infected approximately 30,000 people, killing more than 11,000 and affecting thousands more in areas still suffering from the effects of civil wars. Sierra Leone and Liberia reported EBOV cases in every county demonstrating the efficient spread of this highly contagious virus in the well-connected societies of West Africa. In co… Show more

“…Microspheres were also coupled with bovine serum albumin as a negative control. SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV specific immunoglobulin antibody titres in mouse sera were measured using a microsphere immunoassay as previously described with some minor alterations (13,22,23). Briefly, microspheres coupled to his-tagged Spike S1 proteins of SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, or MERS-CoV (Sino Biological 40591-V08H, 40150-V08B1, & 40069-V08H, respectively), and control beads coupled to bovine serum albumin (BSA) were combined and diluted in MIA buffer (PBS-1% BSA-0.02% Tween20) at a dilution of 1/200.…”

“…A total of 1645 other mammals recruited in 8 studies gave an overall prevalence of LASV of 0.7% (95% CI; 0.0-2.3) ( Fig 5) [4,49,68,71,77,81,98,103]. Only primates, carnivora and Eulipotyphla showed evidence of current or previous contact with LASV [68,71,98,103].…”

“…In addition, the role played by domestic animals in LASV transmission should be further investigated. This is because in our study, dogs were members of hunting explorations and were in direct contact with the body fluids of rodents [ 53 55 ].…”
