Serological and molecular studies onDirofilaria immitisin dogs from Turkey

Abstract: We estimated the prevalence of Dirofilaria immitis infection in domestic dogs in five Turkish provinces - Sakarya, Kocaeli, Ankara, Elazig and Mersin - using a commercial ELISA kit for detecting circulating antigen and a PCR test for detecting circulating microfilarial DNA. A total of 211 whole-blood and serum samples were collected from dogs of various breeds, ages and life status (owned or stray). Sample population characteristics were recorded and examined for differences in prevalence. Additionally, we col… Show more

“…This result is close to the previous report by Alves et al (1999) (57.1%). According to some of the researchers, no significant differences have been detected between the sexes (Oge et al, 2003;Song et al, 2003;Simsek et al, 2008). Occult infections may be due to different causes, including treatment with macrocyclic lactones or immune-mediated reactions that are able to eliminate the microfilariae or to decrease the fecundity of adult worms.…”

“…In Istanbul the infection affects the 1.52% of the dogs (Öncel and Vural, 2005), 2% in the area of Gemlik of Bursa (Civelek et al, 2007), 9.6% in the province of Kayseri (Yildirim et al, 2007), and 26% in the province of Hatay. A study carried out by Simsek et al (2008) reports prevalences of 14.8% in Ankara, 12.3% in Sakarya, 10.5% in Mersin, and 18.3% in Kocaeli. Finally, in the region of Kirikkale positive cases were also reported (58% of the infected dogs were microfilaremic and 27.46% were amicrofilaremic; Yildiz et al, 2008).…”
