“…A number of serologic investigations have determined the seroprevalence of CVV in various vertebrates but these studies have mostly been confined to the United States. [21][22][23]37,[46][47][48][49][50][51] For instance, 19% of sheep sampled in Texas in 1981 were seropositive for CVV. 46 In another study, antibodies that neutralized CVV were detected in 84 (95%) of 88 horses, 61 (52%) of 118 cattle, and 6 (27%) of 22 Neutralizing antibodies to CVV were also detected in 100 (72%) of 138 white-tailed deer in Minnesota in 1988 and 1989.…”

“…Although these viruses have not been reported in Mexico, they have been associated with livestock infections in the United States. 47,55 For instance, antibodies to Northway virus were identified in 44% of horses sampled in California during [1968][1969][1970][1971][1972]. 55 The establishment of a continuous entomologic-based arbovirus surveillance program in the Yucatan Peninsula would enable identification of other orthobunyaviruses that may be present in this region.…”

“…It belongs to the Bunyamwera serogroup in the genus Orthobunyavirus and was named after the location in northern Utah where it was first isolated from mosquitoes (4). The virus has since been found to be widespread in North and Central America, infecting many species of domestic and wild animals such as deer, cattle, sheep, and horses (5,6,7,8). Epidemiologic studies indicate that CVV can be transmitted via a broad range of mosquito species (9), with the white-tailed deer population as a potential natural reservoir (10).…”

“…Cache valley virus has a wide geographic distribution in North America (Blackmore and Grimstad, 2008), whereas Tensaw virus is found predominantly in the Southeastern United States (Bigler et al, 1975) and Northway virus in Alaska and California (Campbell et al, 1990(Campbell et al, , 1991Walters et al, 1999;Zarnke et al, 1983). Recent evidence suggests these host ranges may not be as restrictive as earlier thought (Sahu et al, 2002). The amplifying hosts for all of these viruses are unclear, however antibodies recognizing Cache valley virus have been found in Desert cottontails (Sylvilagus audubonii), Eastern cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus), and Black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) (Blackmore and Grimstad, 2008).…”
