Serologic Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Chickens in Madras, India

Abstract: Serum samples from 185 chickens (Gallus gallus) collected from the various slaughter markets in and around Madras City, India were examined for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii using the modified agglutination test incorporating mercaptoethanol. Antibodies (> or = 1:25) to T. gondii were found in 39.5% of sera. Antibody titers of individual sera (% in parentheses) were 1:25 (8.1%), 1:50 (10.8%), 1:100 (6.5%), 1:200(2.7%), 1:400 (4.3%), 1:800 (5.9%) 1:1,600 (0.5%), and 1:3,200 (0.5%).

“…Beef is less likely to be a source of infection. 18,19,29,30,31,32 Freezing and the thorough cooking of meat significantly reduces the risk of meat-eating-related Toxoplasma infection and could have contributed to the lack of association of Toxoplasma infection. 30 With the soil-related risk factors, working in a garden with bare hands and also frequently eating unwashed fresh fruits and vegetables showed no significant association with Toxoplasma infection in this study.…”

“…Literák & Hejlícek (1993) remarked that free range chickens may represent a risky source of contamination when manipulation of raw meat is performed with no hygiene measures. Moreover, such chickens keep direct ground contact, becoming a major instrument for determining the level of environmental contamination by T. gondii oocysts (Devada et al, 1998). Dogs play a secondary role in T. gondii transmission in Brazil, once they are not a food source for man.…”
