Seroepidemiology of Chlamydial Infections of Wild Ruminants in Spain

Abstract: Chlamydial infections were determined serologically among wild ruminants in the Nature Park of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas (CNP; Spain). Sampling was done during the period from 1990-95. There were 1,244 blood samples collected, consisting of 490 from fallow deer (Dama dama), 343 from mouflon (Ovis mussimon), 283 from red deer (Cervus elaphus) and 128 from Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica). Specific complement-fixing antibodies of Chlamydia spp. were detected by means of microtechnique, using lipo… Show more

“…The prevalence of C. abortus antibodies found in this study (1.0%) is lower than the 37% previously reported in a high density free-ranging population of mouflon in southern Spain (Cubero-Pablo et al 2000). Mouflon density is not homogeneous throughout its distribution area in south-central Spain, but it reaches its higher values (up to 3.2 mouflon/km 2 ) in Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park (Blanco 1998) and is scattered in lower density spots in private hunting areas in most of its distribution range in south-central Spain (Blanco 1998, Santiago-Moreno et al 2003.…”

“…in fallow deer and 24% in both red deer and Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) (Cubero-Pablo et al, 2000). The prevalence rates were significantly higher in wild ruminants inhabiting the peripheral region of the study area, which simultaneously served as pasture for sheep and goats, while in the central areas, where no domestic ruminants were present, the prevalence was lower.…”

“…Many wild birds (Kaleta and Taday 2003) and ruminants (Cubero-Pablo et al 2000) can also carry some species of Chlamydiaceae. Cross-species transmission is widespread in chlamydial circulation (Lemus et al 2010).…”
