The appearance of Paul Hollingsworth’s book of translations, The Hagiography of Kievan Rus’ (Hollingsworth 1992), provides the pretext for this survey. Tales of saints, or of candidates for sainthood, constitute a substantial proportion of the extant native literature of pre-Mongol Rus, comparable in volume only with the chronicles. This in itself has ensured that the study of hagiography has had a prominent place in the study of early Rus literature and culture, and hence in the wider field of byzantinorussica. In recent years native saints have benefited additionally from changes in the cultural and political climate: the advent of glasnost (from 1985), one of whose main themes was the recovery of the past; the millennium of the Conversion of the Rus, whose celebration in 1988 became a test and a manifestation of glasnost; and eventually, at the end of 1991, the collapse of the USSR and the sharpening of competition between national mythologies (competition for the same cultural space) both within and between the newly independent East Slav states of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. The surge of ‘native’ interest has been matched, only in part fortuitously, by an increase in western publications.

SUMMARY: Отвечая на критику Дениса Иоффе, Александр Пересветов-Мурат не ограничивается констатацией того, что по географическим, методологическим и другим оговоренным в книге соображениям он не рассматривал специально проблематику ереси жидовствующих или еврейского присутствия в дохристианском Киеве, Крыму или в Византии (именно с этими сюжетами связаны основные претензии Иоффе). Пересветов-Мурат предлагает подробный конспект своей пока еще мало известной российскому читателю книги “Ухмылка отсутствующего кота”, посвященной филологическому анализу оригинальных и переводных текстов adversus Iudaeos , которые циркулировали среди восточных славян с момента проникновения на Русь христианской литературы и до начала XVI века. Тонкий и сложный анализ Пересветова связан с реконструкцией интертекстуального пространства традиции adversus Iudaeos в рамках общего христианского литературного поля. В статье подробно обосновывается позиция автора, состоящая в том, что попытки рассматривать циркулировавшие в Древней Руси тексты adversus Iudaeos в качестве свидетельств реальной полемики с евреями, а тем более – как источники информации о действительных евреях и славяно-еврейских контактах методологически неверны и идеологически предвзяты. Пересветов считает, что реакция Иоффе мотивирована не столько научными соображениями, сколько чтением его книги в специфическом ракурсе одной из версий российско-еврейской истории, для которой принципиально важны еврейское присутствие на Руси с древнейших времен (при этом Русь мыслится в границах Российской империи) и древность российского этнического/расового антисемитизма.

A Past of One’s Own: The Post-Soviet Historiography of Russian Philosophy

This article analyzes the historiography of Russian philosophy as it appears in post-Soviet Russian university textbooks. How is a Russian national tradition in philosophy – a discipline that otherwise operates with a universal truth-claim not bound by its cultural settings – created and defended in these texts? Particular emphasis is placed on their rejection of the alleged Eurocentrism of Western historiography, their dependence (nevertheless) on Western notions of philosophy, and their idea of Russian philosophy as “native philosophy” ( otechestvennaia filosofiia ) with an independent “integral history.” The article concludes that this material presents us with an example of cultural nationalism in academic writing. Статья рассматривает историографию русской философии как она предстает в постсоветских университетских учебниках. Каким образом создается и отстаивается в этих текстах российская (и даже русская) национальная традиция в философии – дисциплине, по определе-нию оперирующей универсальной категорией истины, не связанной с конкретным культурным контекстом? Особое внимание уделяется демонстрирующемуся в этих учебниках отрицательному отношению к предполагаемому европоцентризму западной историографии, при одновременной зависимости их от западной концепции философии, а также идее философской традиции в России как “отечественной философии” с независимой “интегральной историей”. В статье дела-ется вывод о том, что рассмотренный материал являет собой пример культурного национализма в академической сфере.
