“…Over 50% of violent behaviors are committed by only 6% of the population (Elliott, 1994;Wolfgang, Figlio, & Sellin, 1972), This 6% that chronically displays antisocial behavior is the focus of the current article. Because antisocial behaviors are diverse (including assault, noncompliance, stealing, and coercion) and are loosely correlated, and because different disciplines operationalize the problem syndrome in diverse ways (e.g., conduct disorder, juvenile delinquency), the term chronic conduct problems is used in this article to characterize the antisocial behaviors of this group.…”

“…Even more striking differences hold in the probability of rearrest (Elliott, 1994), Once an African American male enters the judicial system, employment opportunities dry up, and both society and the individual may lose hope. Race differences in self-reported violent behavior in adolescence (the ratio is only 5 to 4, for Whites vs. African Americans; Elliott, 1994) are far less striking than differences in arrests and rearrests, which suggests that social forces selectively operate across development to channel African American adolescent males toward school failure, arrest, and recidivism.…”

“…More recent longitudinal investigations using a developmental approach showed an orderly sequence of ages of onset for different types of problem behaviors (Loeber, 1990), delinquent behaviors (LeBlanc & Fréchette, 1989) and sexually deviant behaviors (Abel, Osbom, & Twigg, 1993). In a large scale study of self-reported data, Elliott (1994) showed evidence of a developmental progression from minor delinquency to alcohol and marijuana use, followed by serious delinquency (e.g., aggravated assault, robbery, and rape) and, finally, polydrug use. The studies underline some continuity between different behavioral manifestations of deviance.…”

“…Juvenile offenders often live in impoverished communities characterized by a high percentage of families receiving public assistance, and female-headed households (Elliott, 1994;Emerson, 1969;Hawkins et al, 1998;Land, 2000). Interestingly, studies have found that…”
