Abstract: Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) first started completing Smart Wells in 1999, trialing standalone technologies such as permanent downhole gauges and inflow control valves in individual wells. Once these were seen as successful, the technology was used extensively on a single platform. This was later extended to application in a whole field, taking advantage of refinements such as variable downhole control valves and multiphase flow metering.

In Shell, asset professionals use advanced technologies and processes for field management and optimising production performance. Real time monitoring of wells and compressors has become the norm, delivering higher uptime and increased production. Asset teams use visual information on hundreds of wells and their facilities using a web-based portal. The wells and facilities with events or deviations, i.e. exceptions, are highlighted, enabling the staff to focus on fixing the critical wells and facilities. The information is brought together in Collaborative Work Environments with video connection to streamline the communication between field and office and speed up decision making. Shell has implemented these capabilities in a number of assets around the world, for example in Oman, Russia, Brunei, UK and Gulf of Mexico. The people side is a large part of the attention, during the implementation and for sustainability of the solutions. Awareness sessions, training, local ownership, feedback sessions, coaching and regular reviews are part of the embedding activities. The paper describes the capabilities and the benefits, and illustrates this with a field case from Salym in Russia. This includes the approach to change management and learning from both the project and the embedding phase. The benefits include HSE improvements (less travel exposure), increased production and reduced operating cost.

On the tenth anniversary of the first Intelligent Energy Conference held in 2006, it is appropriate to look back at some of the technologies introduced at the time, and report out on how these have been progressed. This paper discusses one of the technologies: the use of data driven models for well rate estimation, to support and enable real-time surveillance and optimization. In the early 2000s real-time data from oil and gas fields became available in abundance on engineering central office desktops via process data historians and wide area / global communications networks. A key challenge to production management, then, as now, was: "What are the wells producing?" The April 2006 SPE Paper 99963 introduced data driven modelling for continuous well production surveillance leveraging on the suddenly abundant and often very revealing PI data. Today, ten years later, a stream of success stories on the use real time well rate estimates based on data driven models continue to be reported, and these tools are seen as best practice in many different operational scenarios. This paper reviews the key concepts introduced in 2006, and extensions and applications of the technology to various aspects of production surveillance and optimization. As with all innovations, the most challenging elements in the journey have been related to people and processes. The paper discusses these issues in relation to the important role played by technology integration themes such as Smart Fields.

Multilateral wells with electric submersible pumps and intelligent completions are notoriously difficult to operate and require long testing and frequent retests due to production condition changes and significant transients resulting from the horizontal undulating drains. For human operators, this task is very time-consuming and extremely challenging given the multidimensional and multi timescale system characteristics. However, the process can be automated via optimisation and control, with the proposed algorithm responding to observed production and system changes throughout the well’s life. To that end, a reduced-order well model is derived and validated with real-well-matched synthetic model data, and subsequently an automation algorithm is developed. This innovative and integrated approach to real-time lift and inflow automated control offers the prospect of boosting operators’ production value and investment returns. The algorithm utilises existing or new intelligent completion hardware and instrumentation and the wellsite-deployable smart algorithm, capable of adjusting to varying well conditions and optimally managing the production throughout the well’s life. To achieve that, the algorithm allocates flow-rate and water cut contributions from each lateral or zone and as such recalibrates the well model on the fly using the real-time field data. We present simulation results using a field-data-matched synthetic model and are working with an operator to implement the technology in the field. All in all, such a data-driven automation to autopilot intelligent production is now within sight and could in the future scale towards multiwell/fieldwide solution.
