Serendipity and its study

Abstract: Purpose ? The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of serendipity and approaches to its study particularly in relation to information studies. Design/methodology/approach ? The origins of the term serendipity are described and its elaboration as an exploratory and explanatory concept in science and the social sciences are outlined. The distinction between serendipity and serendipity pattern is explained and theoretical and empirical studies of both serendipity and the serendipity patterns are explor… Show more

“…It also foregrounds the crucial interplay between a "prepared mind" (see e.g. Copeland, 2017;Foster & Ellis, 2014;McCay-Peet & Toms, 2015) and the flexibility and openness required to embrace a shift in direction. While being sensitised towards a problem, topic or effect can certainly have a positive role in recognising an opportunity in an unexpected outcome, a flexible, open-minded outlook may be needed to pursue such an opening and allow the reconsideration of the research direction.…”

“…Erdelez defined information encountering as accidental information discovery, which is similar to serendipity [23]. Studies in the library and information science have focused on the patterns and effects of serendipity when people were looking for information [16,19,24,25].…”

“…Current research casts serendipity as a phenomenon experienced a posteriori (Martin & Quan-Haase, 2016). This reflects the pure definition of serendipity which suggests that it is the noticing of an unanticipated datum that spawns a new, unsought for, solution, explanation or theory (Edward Foster & Ellis, 2014). However, the definition is slippery (Makri & Blandford, 2012) and has been broadened to include both targeted searches which solve a problem via an unexpected route and also untargeted searches which solve immediate problems (Yaqub, 2018).…”
