Ser/Thr protein phosphatases in fungi: structure, regulation and function

Abstract: Reversible phospho-dephosphorylation of proteins is a major mechanism for the control of cellular functions. By large, Ser and Thr are the most frequently residues phosphorylated in eukar-yotes. Removal of phosphate from these amino acids is catalyzed by a large family of well-conserved enzymes, collectively called Ser/Thr protein phosphatases. The activity of these enzymes has an enormous impact on cellular functioning. In this work we pre-sent the members of this family in S. cerevisiae … Show more

“…While PP1c enzymes are widely distributed among eukaryotes, Ppz phosphatases are found only in fungi [ 5 ]. Ppz phosphatases play an important role in the maintenance of monovalent cation homeostasis, although the specific mechanisms can be somewhat different between species [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ].…”

“…The putative proteins encode by ORF2, ORF3 and ORF4 of FgV1-ch showed five, one and six amino acid differences with proteins of FgV1-DK21, respectively. It is worth noting that among the six different amino acids of the putative protein encoded by ORF4 of FgV1-ch compared to FgV1-DK21, there are several serine and threonine changes, which may be phosphorylated easily and lead to functional changes [24,25]. As reported, SWI6, which is involved in the regulation of meiotic initiation, plays an important role in FgV1-DK21-induced phenotype alteration [26].…”

“…CDK also negatively regulates Cdc15 ( Jaspersen and Morgan, 2000 ; König et al, 2010 ). Finally, Clb5-Cdc28 might antagonize Cdc14 by direct phosphorylation ( Li et al, 2014 ), while the interplay between CDK thresholds and a constellation of phosphatases acting at the G 1 /S boundary is beginning to emerge ( Ariño et al, 2019 ; Martín et al, 2020 ).…”
