Sequentiality, Mutual Visibility, and Behavioral Matching: Body Sway and Pitch Register During Joint Decision Making

Abstract: We studied behavioral matching during joint decision making. Drawing on motion-capture and voice data from 12 dyads, we analyzed bodysway and pitch-register matching during sequential transitions and continuations, with and without mutual visibility. Body sway was matched most strongly during sequential transitions in the conditions of mutual visibility. Pitch-register matching was higher during sequential transitions than continuations only when the participants could not see each other. These results suggest… Show more

“…In a subsequent interview, Ann explained that they always walk in front of Paul to encourage him to keep moving. However, body position is significant for interaction, and CA research has shown how the coordination of body movements is important for “the jointness of a decision” (Stevanovic et al, , p. 36). When walking and talking, moreover, actions involving objects or place may compete with verbal interaction; at line 24 Ann was pulling her smartphone out of her shoulder bag, as she turned to acknowledge Paul's comment.…”

“…However, these systems have mainly been utilized with a few markers for tracking the coordination of specific body parts, such as hand positions of dyads ( Gueugnon et al, 2016 ; Gorman et al, 2017 ), the position of peoples’ heads during joint tasks ( Kijima et al, 2017 ), coordination of finger motion between dyads ( Oullier et al, 2008 ; Fine et al, 2015 ), coordination of foot movements between dyads ( Vesper et al, 2013 ) and coordination of heads and hands between dyads ( Dammeyer and Køppe, 2013 ). To a lesser extent, optical motion capture systems have been utilized for tracking upper body movements by placing more than one or two infrared sensors on people performing joint tasks ( Varlet et al, 2011 ; Llobera et al, 2016 ; Preissmann et al, 2016 ; Stevanovic et al, 2017 ), playing music together ( Ragert et al, 2013 ; Glowinski et al, 2015 ; Jakubowski et al, 2017 ) or moving together to the rhythm of music ( Burger et al, 2014 ; Toiviainen et al, 2014 ). Analysis of interpersonal coordination has been mainly performed by the same non-linear methods mentioned above for data obtained through the other motion tracking systems.…”

“…In spite of these developments, it needs to be acknowledged that in "non-CA" interaction research, the exploration of the uses of the body in therapeutic settings has been more intensive and detailed than in CA thus far (see, e.g., Lavelle, Healey, & McCabe, 2014;Ramseyer & Tschacher, 2011;Scheflen, 1973). The combination of up-to-date motion-capturing techniques and conversation analytic insights is possible (see Stevanovic et al, 2017)-applications in therapeutic interaction await future study. (3) The incipient research on processes of change taking place over several sessions is also a field that awaits further elaboration.…”
