Sequential Response of Sage Antioxidant Metabolism to Chilling Treatment

Abstract: Chilling influences the growth and metabolism of plants. The physiological response and acclimatization of genotypes in relation to stress stimulus can be different. Two sage cultivars: ‘Icterina’ and ‘Purpurascens’ were subjected to 4 °C and 18 °C (control), and sampled between the 5th and 14th day of the treatment. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity was up-regulated in chilled ‘Purpurascens’ on the 14th day, while guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) activity increased on the 10th and 12th day in relation to the contr… Show more

“…When there is high production of ROS the catalase (CAT) catalyse the dismutation of H 2 O 2 and convert it into H 2 O and O 2 in the cell mainly in peroxisomes and mitochondria and finishes the detoxification started by other enzymes (Kalisz et al, 2019).…”

“…Photosynthetic electron transport chains preferentially undergo cyclic and pseudocyclic electron transport and transfer electrons to O 2 to form O 2 − [ 18 ]. In addition, a high ROS content negatively affects plant growth, leading to oxidative damage of proteins and nucleic acids, as well as membrane lipid peroxidation [ 19 ]. Plants employ a series of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC: 1.15.1.1) and peroxidase (POD), to eliminate excess ROS [ 20 ].…”

“…Corn (Maize), a major food crop in many parts of the world [1], is the third most important food crop in China after wheat and rice [2]. Since corn is a warm-climate plant, chilling is one of the abiotic stimuli that influences its growth and development [3]. Therefore, effective measures to mitigate the damage caused by cold stress are crucial in corn production.…”
