One prospective study of 102 patients ineligible for transplantation, resection, radiofrequency ablation, or transarterial chemoembolization (tace) who received sbrt (median 36 Gy in 6 fractions given every 2 days) showed a 1-year local control rate of 87% 42 . A dose-response relationship was observed; the Child-Pugh score declined by 2 or more points at 3 months in 30% of patients; and deaths in 5 of the 102 patients were possibly related to sbrt.…”

The annual Eastern Canadian Gastrointestinal Cancer Consensus Conference 2016 was held in Montreal, Quebec, 5-7 February. Experts in radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgical oncology, and infectious diseases involved in the management of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies participated in presentations and discussion sessions for the purpose of developing the recommendations presented here. Diagnosis at advanced disease stage and early vascular invasion are the bane of majority of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in India. The currently standardized curative and palliative treatment modalities [surgery, ablative techniques, trans-catheter chemotherapy, systemic chemotherapy] are suboptimal for a significant proportion of disease stages. Interest in radiotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma has seen a resurgence with revolutionary improvements in targeting radiation doses safely. Encouraging results have been reported with a host of radiation techniques from conformal radiotherapy, stereotactic whole body radiation therapy to charged particle based therapies. The dissemination of this knowledge has been slow across other specialties involved in care of patients with HCC. However the increasing availability of radiotherapy services predicts a hopeful future for wider evaluation of radiotherapy in HCC. ( J CLIN EXP HEPATOL 2014;4:S122-S125)
