Sequential meta-C–H olefination of synthetically versatile benzyl silanes: effective synthesis of meta-olefinated toluene, benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohols

Abstract: Tremendous progress has been made towards ortho-selective C-H functionalization in the last three decades. However, the activation of distal C-H bonds and their functionalization has remained fairly underdeveloped. Herein, we report sequential meta-C-H functionalization by performing selective mono-olefination and bis-olefination with late stage modification of the C-Si as well as Si-O bonds. Temporary silyl connection was found to be advantageous due to its easy installation, easy removal and wide synthetic d… Show more

“…Excellent meta ‐selectivity as high as 98:2 was obtained by overriding the inherent electronic nature of the benzyl substrates in the presence of palladium(II) catalysts, the N ‐Ac‐Gly‐OH ligand, and HFIP as the solvent ( 57 a – f ). Following this, our group also reported the feasibility of this strategy to olefinate benzylsilanes 58 at the meta ‐position (Scheme ) . High meta ‐selectivity for the olefination reaction ( meta /others, >20:1) was obtained with good yield ( 59 a – f ).…”

“…Compared to the templates T4 and T5 , the template T3 displayed higher reactivity and regioselectivity ( meta /others >20:1). The template T7 , significantly improved reactivity and almost quantitative conversion was obtained, whereas a 3‐methoxy substitution ( T6 ) caused both a decreased conversion and meta selectivity ( meta /others >10:1). Under the optimized reaction conditions, T7 successfully afforded the desired olefinated product in an overall yield of 91 % with high meta selectivity ( meta /others >20:1).…”
