Sequencing, assembly, annotation, and gene expression: novel insights into the hormonal control of carrot root development revealed by a high-throughput transcriptome

Abstract: Previous studies have indicated that hormonal control is essential for plant root growth. The root of the carrot is an edible vegetable with a high nutritional value. However, molecular mechanisms underlying hormone-mediated root growth of carrot have not been illustrated. Therefore, the present study collected carrot root samples from four developmental stages, and performed transcriptome sequencing to understand the molecular functions of plant hormones in carrot root growth. A total of 160,227 transcripts w… Show more

“…In the studies on the taproot development of radish and carrot, several key GO terms (such as cell wall, cytoskeleton, and regulation of biological process) have been identified [11, 12, 45]. These GO terms reflected the major physiological events of storage root development.…”

“…Brassinosteroid signal transduction also plays a crucial role in taproot development [12]. In higher plants, the activity of BZR1/2, the transcription factor of brassinosteroid signal transduction pathway [64], is mainly regulated by dephosphorylation at post transcription level [65].…”

“…Carrot development involves successive changes in organ size, metabolism, and physiological processes [ 27 , 28 ]. This process is essential for carrot production and quality and has been an area of increasing interest [ 29 ]. CK is necessary for cell division of early embryogenesis, and it is believed to play important roles in anthocyanin accumulation, senescence, and root enlargement in carrot [ 30 33 ].…”

“…After checking and quantifying the DNA, we mixed the multiplexed DNA libraries with normalized 10nM concentration in equal volumes. The library was then sequenced using an Illumina HiSeq™ 2000 platform 50 . Raw reads produced from sequencing machines contain dirty reads, which have been uploaded to the NCBI Sequence Read Archive (Bioproject: PRJNA321448 (SRP074997).…”
