Sequence variation of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) BCRF1 in lymphomas in non-endemic areas of nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Abstract: To characterize the sequence variation and the potential implication of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) oncogene in lymphoma, BamHI-C fragment rightward reading frame 1 (BCRF1) was sequenced in different types of EBV-positive lymphoma in northern China, and polymorphisms were compared with previous variation data from other malignancies. The dominate subtype of BCRF1 in EBV-positive lymphoma was the B95-8 prototype, and a mutation in the signal peptide was more strongly associated with Hodgkin's lymphoma. The hig… Show more

“…Highly expressed viral BCRF1 ( p -value = 1.97 × 10 −5 ) can suppress the cytokine synthesis of interleukins and interferon, and weaken the human natural killer cell and cytotoxic T-cell (CTL) responses so that EBV can subsequently establish latent infection. It can be supported that BCRF1 may have a role in the interaction between EBV and the human immune system [ 68 , 69 ].…”

“…Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a type of epithelial cancer that is distinct from other head and neck cancers. The endemic variation highly prevalent in Southeast Asia has direct links to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and regularly presents as an undifferentiated histologic subtype [1]. Current estimates by GLOBOCAN now incorporate NPC as a malignancy discrete from other head and neck malignancies among the 36 disease locales assessed [2] According to a 2013 report, NPC was responsible for nearly 42,100 new patients and 21,320 deaths in China alone in said year.…”
