Sequence variation in genes encoding miRNAs/targets and other related approaches for possible use in crop improvement

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), which are involved in regulation of gene expression in almost all plant and animal systems. In crop plants, a large number of miRNAs are now known, which regulate expression of genes controlling a variety of traits including yield and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Like protein-coding genes, miRNA genes (MIRs) and their products (including pri-miRNAs, pre-miRNAs or miRNAs themselves) also exhibit sequence variation. This variation affects the co… Show more

“…Several miRNAs identified and characterized in crop plants were found to be involved in the development processes, phytohormone signaling, flowering, sex determination, and biotic/abiotic stress responses [45]. Lately, miRNA-based molecular markers have been developed and used for various purposes in crop plants, including genetic diversity analysis [16,24,46]. SSRs, among other molecular markers, were extensively used for genetic diversity analysis, QTL mapping, genome-wide association analysis, and marker-assisted breeding [47,48].…”

“…The genomic context of rsRNA, especially lncRNAs, has a direct bearing on the efficiency of CRISPR‐based approaches (Summanwar et al, 2020). In addition, naturally existing sequence variants and species‐specific rsRNAs might possess distinct expression and/or function and be better suited for manipulating certain traits (Gautam & Gupta, 2020). Detailed information about the rsRNA mediated regulation (in cis / trans , transcript degradation/locus methylation) and target gene function is essential for designing a candidate‐specific approach (Summanwar et al, 2020).…”

“…It is worth mentioning the usefulness of the described tools not only in miRNA functional analyses but also as an effective approach for improving the agronomic traits in model and crop plants (reviewed in [ 181 , 182 , 183 ]).…”
