The mechanisms governing pore development, particularly of organic pores, in marine−continental transitional shales remain poorly constrained. This study investigated the primary controls on pore evolution within transitional shales of the Benxi Formation using low-pressure gas adsorption, field emission scanning electron microscopy, bulk mineralogy and maceral analyses, and other techniques. Total organic carbon (TOC) contents exhibit positive correlations with shale microporosity and negative correlations with macroporosity. On the basis of S/TOC ratios and sedimentological evidence, the Benxi shales accumulated across a range of marine, brackish, and freshwater depositional environments. In general, more negative δ 13 C kerogen values correlate with higher S/TOC, consistent with a marine source for the most 13 C-depleted kerogens. Kerogens with δ 13 C of < −25‰ reflect a marine origin, while those with δ 13 C of > −25‰ indicate varying salinity conditions. Both organic matter composition and pore development within type III kerogens proved highly sensitive to paleosalinity. Specifically, marine-sourced organic matter possesses substantially lower microporosity but higher meso-and macroporosities compared to material deposited in freshwater settings. Accordingly, thermally mature marine-influenced Benxi shales likely retain greater shale gas potential versus non-marine equivalents.

The tight sandstone reservoirs have become the focus of today's oil and gas exploration. To clarify the microscopic characteristics of the tight sandstone reservoirs of the Chang 63 deep water gravity flow origin in the Huaqing area, the Chang 63 gravity flow origin reservoirs in the study area are divided into three categories. They are the formation reservoir of sandy clastic flow (FROSF), formation reservoir of muddy debris flow deposits and turbidites (FROMT) and formation reservoir of slides and slumps (FROSS). In this study, core and logging data, thin sections, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM), and mercury intrusion capillary pressure (MICP) were combined to investigate the rock composition and pore‐throat characteristics of tight sandstone reservoirs with different types of gravity flow origins. The reservoir micro‐heterogeneity is also investigated in this paper. The results show that the reservoirs with different gravity flow origins are similar in lithology and are mainly composed of feldspar lithic sandstone and lithic feldspar sandstone. The pore types are mainly intergranular pores and feldspar‐dissolved pores. There are significant differences in the porosity, permeability, microscopic pore‐throat characteristics and microscopic heterogeneity of the reservoirs. From FROSF to FROMT and FROSS, the porosity, permeability, mercury inlet saturation, discharge pressure, median pressure and mercury removal efficiency gradually decrease. The tightness of the reservoir gradually increases. The storage capacity is gradually reduced. The disparity between the throat radius and pore radius gradually increases. The pore‐throat structure becomes more complex, and the microscopic heterogeneity of the reservoir gradually increases.

Layered rocks are heterogeneous media composed of multiscale minerals with contrasting geomechanical properties. It remains unclear how the mechanical responses of constituent minerals among different adjacent layers vary in a microscale. Based on the grid nanoindentation tests assisted by high‐resolution scanning electron microscopy and energy‐dispersive spectroscopy techniques, we quantified the mechanical responses of various minerals in an interbedded sandstone‐mudstone core sample and provided visual mineralogies and indentation patterns of different adjacent layers. Results show that the Young's modulus, hardness, and elasticity index of quartz and dolomite decrease, whereas their fracture toughness and plastic work ratio increase from the sandstone layer to the mudstone layer. Quartz displays elastic‐dominated deformations in the sandstone layer whereas transforms into medium‐plastic deformations in the mudstone layer. The mean values of Young's modulus, hardness, and elasticity index of quartz in the sandstone layer are 1.28, 2.00, and 1.56 times higher than that in the mudstone layer, respectively. Dolomite and phyllosilicate minerals show prominently plastic‐dominated deformations in each layer. When an indenter encounters multiple minerals simultaneously, the mechanical responses are determined by the softer phases and irregular indent impressions are generated. Shear and radical cracks are prone to occur in the elastic‐dominated minerals, while chipping damage is induced in the plastic‐dominated minerals. This work provides new insights and fundamental understandings in geomechanical properties contrasts in multilayered rocks, and can facilitate the geomechanical modeling and upscaling schemes in multilayered formations.
