-The aim of this paper was to assess, in a study case, whether ash-fall deposition influenced the character of the peat-forming vegetation in some coal beds in the southernmost Paraná Basin in Brazil, taking into consideration that records of tonstein levels are common in some coal bearing-strata. An investigation was made of the uppermost Faxinal coal seam (Coal Seam S), which displays two adjacent coal beds interbedded with a tonstein level. On the basis of the botanical affinity between the miospores and the parent plants as well as the relative abundance of the different plant groups, each coal plant assemblage was determined. Furthermore, previous paleobotanical data obtained on the tonstein level that identified a compressed Glossopteris flora were incorporated in the study. Palynofacies analyses performed on both coal and tonstein levels demonstrated good results for the recognition of preserved organic matter and changes in paleoenvironmental conditions along the coal sequence. The effect of volcanic ash-fall deposition was reflected by changes in the character of the vegetation associated with coal layers below and above the tonstein. Palynofacies results corroborated palynological and paleobotanical interpretation and contributed to the establishment of the floral succession deposited over a short time interval, under the effect of volcanic ash-fall deposition.Key words: palynology, paleobotany, palynofacies, coal, tonstein, Paraná Basin.RESUMO -O trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito da deposição de cinza vulcânica sobre o caráter da vegetação responsável pela formação de alguns carvões na jazida do Faxinal, levando em consideração que registros de tonstein são comuns em sequências de carvão na porção sul da bacia do Paraná, no Brasil. Em estudo de caso, foi analisada a camada de carvão superior (Camada S) que apresenta, na sua porção mais superior, dois leitos adjacentes de carvão intercalados por um nível de tonstein originado de cinza vulcânica. A composição das palinofloras foi determinada com base na afinidade dos esporos e dos grãos de pólen e na relação de freqüência dos diferentes grupos vegetais. Dados paleobotânicos anteriores desenvolvidos nesse nível de tonstein, que demonstraram a presença de uma importante Flora Glossopteris, foram incorporados ao trabalho aqui proposto. ResumoDe forma a avaliar os impactos das atividades de mineração desenvolvidas na Mina de Candiota, maior reserva brasileira de carvão, sobre a qualidade das águas subterrâneas, foram efetuados estudos geoquí-micos da água e dos arenitos parálicos da Formação Rio Bonito que constituem o sistema aqüífero granular. A modelagem geoquímica indica que, para a maioria dos casos, a água subterrânea é subsaturada em relação ao equilíbrio água-carbonatos e supersaturada em relação ao equilíbrio água-goethita e -caolinita. Os resultados mostraram acidificação e presença de sulfato pouco significativas na água subterrânea. A oxidação natural da pirita ocorre de forma limitada pela entrada restrita de oxigênio no sistema aqüífero, sendo responsável pelas correlações positivas verificadas entre sulfato e ferro. O conteúdo de ferro, entretanto, é menor que o valor esperado para a oxidação da pirita na água subterrânea, o que pode ser explicado pela precipitação de oxi-hidróxidos de Fe (por exemplo, goethita). A dissolução de carbonatos (calcita, siderita e ankerita) é um processo importante na neutralização da acidez do meio, controlando a composição química da água subterrânea pelo consumo de prótons e pela solubilização de Ca 2+ e Mg 2+. Em comparação à composição média nas águas superficiais, cálcio e magnésio são significativamente mais empobrecidos que sódio e potássio nas águas subterrâneas, o que pode estar relacionado à adsorção seletiva. Para a correlação cálcio-bicarbonato, verificase a provável contribuição de CO 2 atmosférico e de CO 2 contido no solo, bem como da oxidação da matéria orgânica para o acréscimo no conteúdo final de bicarbonato.Palavras-chave: água subterrânea, hidrogeoquímica, carvão, Mina de Candiota. Abstract Characterization and geochemical evolution of groundwater of Candiota mine, RS, Brazil.In order to evaluate the mining activities influences of Candiota Mine, the largest Brazilian coal reserve, over the groundwater quality, geochemical studies were carried out on water and paralic sandstones of the Rio Bonito Formation, which constitutes a granular aquifers system. Geochemical modeling indicates that for most cases, groundwater is subsatured in relation to the balance water-carbonates and supersatured in relation to the balance water-goethite and -kaolinite. The phisico-chemical results of the water samples showed little evidence of significant acidification or sulphatisation of groundwater by acid mine drainage of mining activities. A natural but limited pyrite oxidation by the restricted entrance of oxygen in the aquifer system seems to be responsible for the positive correlations between sulphate and iron. However, the iron contents is lower than the expected value from pyrite dissolution which can be explained by the precipitation of Fe-oxi-hydroxides (e.g. goethite). Abstract. The coal-bearing formation of Lower Permian in Huainan coalfield is well developed with lagoon-tidal flat deposition and delta system deposition. According to the identification of the sequence boundaries represented by regional unconformity and incised valley filling sandstone base, combined with the characteristics of sedimentary cycles, the high resolution sequence stratigraphy of the Early Permian coal seams (the Shanxi formation and Lower Shihezi formation) have been analyzed. The coal seams are divided into 3 third-order sequences from bottom to top and the sequence stratigraphic framework has been established. The thickness variation of the coal seams shows that the major minable seams were developed in the transgressive systems tract of lagoon-tidal and the delta plain environments, in which the total coal seams are thicker in SQ3 and thinner in sequence SQ2, with the thinnest in SQ1.Within the sequence, the thickest coals were developed in the transgressive systems tract, the thicker coals in the high-stand systems tract and the thinnest coals were preserved in the low-stand systems tract.
