Continental ‘overfilled’ conditions during rift initiation are conventionally explained as due to low creation of accommodation compared with sediment supply. Alternatively, sediment supply can be relatively high from the onset of rifting due to an antecedent drainage system. The alluvial Lower Group of the western Plio–Pleistocene Corinth rift is used to investigate the interaction of fluvial sedimentation with early rifting. This rift was obliquely superimposed on the Hellenide mountain belt from which it inherited a significant palaeorelief. Detailed sedimentary logging and mapping of the well‐exposed syn‐rift succession document the facies distributions, palaeocurrents and stratigraphic architecture. Magnetostratigraphy and biostratigraphy are used to date and correlate the alluvial succession across and between fault blocks. From 3·2 to 1·8 Ma, a transverse low sinuosity braided river system flowed north/north‐east to east across east–west‐striking active fault blocks (4 to 7 km in width). Deposits evolved downstream from coarse alluvial conglomerates to fine‐grained lacustrine deposits over 15 to 30 km. The length scale of facies belts is much greater than, and thus not directly controlled by, the width of the fault blocks. At its termination, the distributive river system built small, stacked deltas into a shallow lake margin. The presence of a major antecedent drainage system is supported by: (i) a single major sediment entry point; (ii) persistence of a main channel belt axis; (iii) downstream fining at the scale of the rift basin. The zones of maximum subsidence on individual faults are aligned with the persistent fluvial axis, suggesting that sediment supply influenced normal fault growth. Instead of low accommodation rate during the early rift phase, this study proposes that facies progradation can be controlled by continuous and high sediment supply from antecedent rivers.

Discrepancies in models of continental rift-basin dynamics and stratigraphic response calls on further investigation on the subject. Geometric- and lithological trends between stages of faulting is studied in the Permian- Triassic continental rift succession in the Horda Platform. The Horda Platform occupies the northeastern margin of the North Sea aulacogen where Late Permian-Early Triassic faulting shaped the Caledonian pre-rift landscape into a series of N-S trending half-graben basins, filled by Permian-Triassic strata. A tectonostratigraphic model developed from seismic- and well-data details the Permian-Triassic basin fill and structural basin development. Regional unconformities mark the top and base of the succession, while internally, six depositional sequences are delineated by erosional- and transgressive surfaces. Thickness maps reveal three syn-rift stages, where strain migrated and concentrated in different parts of the developing rift basin, from disconnected faults and scattered depocentres with varying accommodation space hosting deposits of different thicknesses, to fully linked faults bounding half-graben basins with expanded and connected depocentres. The lithology through the syn-rift stages reflect how sedimentation gradually outpace accommodation space creation. The overlying thick post-rift succession shows no evidence of rifting besides a minor fault-displacement along the Øygarden Fault Zone in the Late Triassic, reflected by slight wedging. Meanwhile distinct interchanging sand- and mud-dominated intervals reflect strong climatic fluctuations during the post-rift. The spatio-temporal heterogeneity in fluvial facies makes stratigraphic correlation challenging and is further complicated by discontinuous surfaces caused by basin floor tilting. With this study, classical sequence stratigraphic models are evaluated and revised against the observations from the Horda Platform. The stratigraphic model presented takes into account the dynamics of strain along faults through time and space and the resulting diachronic boundaries between the rift stages.

RESUMENLa cuenca Los Barriles, al norte de la cuenca San José del Cabo, forma parte de la Provincia Extensional del Golfo. Es un medio graben, limitado en su lado oeste por el sistema de fallas Los Barriles. Nuestra investigación confirma que éste no es parte de la falla San José del Cabo, sino una estructura independiente. El relleno sedimentario se constituye de tres secuencias estratigráficas: SE 1, SE 2 y SE 3. La SE 1 está conformada por las formaciones Los Barriles y Trinidad. La Formación Los Barriles se compone de conglomerado y arenisca formados en abanicos aluviales y está en contacto con el basamento plutónico y metamórfico cretácico en el oeste, mediante la falla Los Barriles, y en el este a través de una discordancia. La Formación Trinidad está constituida por lodolita y arenisca de origen marino. Ambas formaciones se interdigitan e integran abanicos deltaicos sin capas frontales de crecimiento progresivo, sugiriendo una rápida subsidencia del bloque de techo a lo largo de la falla marginal. Nanofósiles calcáreos en la SE 1 indican una edad en la nanozona NN11 (Tortoniano tardío -Messiniano), señalando que la subsidencia de la cuenca inició en el Mioceno tardío, antes de la activación de la falla San José del Cabo en el Plioceno. La Formación Refugio (SE 2), compuesta por arenisca y conglomerado fosilífero de origen marino somero, cubre discordantemente a la Formación Trinidad y se interdigita lateralmente con la parte superior de la Formación Los Barriles, conformando un abanico deltaico de aguas someras, probablemente de edad pliocénica. La Formación El Chorro del Pleistoceno sobreyace discordantemente todas las unidades anteriores y cubre localmente al sistema de fallas Los Barriles. Está compuesta por arenisca y conglomerado depositados en abanicos aluviales y se interdigita hacia la línea de costa actual con conglomerado y arenisca fosilíferos marinos formados durante el último período interglacial; ambos constituyen la SE 3.Palabras claves: Provincia Extensional del Golfo; cuenca Los Barriles; cuenca San José del Cabo; abanicos deltaicos; México.
