In this study, we use 3D seismic, well‐log, and core data to investigate the sequence stratigraphy and facies associations of the Paleogene in the Nanpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, East China. Three second‐order sequences—SQEs3‐SQEs2, SQEs1, and SQEd—and 12 third‐order sequences are identified. Fan‐delta, braid‐delta, sublacustrine fan, and lacustrine systems are identified. Four types of tectonic‐induced sequence models are distinguished, which consist of fault‐cliff type, fault‐slope type, axial ramp type, and multiple fault‐terrace type. Sequence architecture of third‐order sequences is dominated by thin lowstand systems tracts with thick transgressive systems tracts (TST) and highstand systems tracts (HST). High‐resolution sediment‐partition pattern analysis shows that a large volume of sediments can be delivered into prodelta/deep‐lacustrine environments during transgressive periods and lake‐level highstand. This study also shows that sand/strata ratios in fan‐delta/braid‐delta front of systems tracts scale have a negative correlation with the subsidence rate, which is demonstrated by the finding that higher subsidence rates correspond to lower sand/strata ratios. This result suggests that subsidence rate has a significant influence on high‐frequency sequences. The occurrence of the high volume of sand‐rich deposits developed in TST and HST and relatively high sand/strata ratios within these sequence units reveal that TST and HST could also have a high hydrocarbon potential. The strongly asymmetrical accommodation generated by an early rapid tectonic subsidence and late tectonic quiescence results in sequence architecture variations between passive‐margin basins and rift basins. Different subsidence rates among different structural belts result in sequence architecture variations within different sequence models.

Based on a combination of high resolution 3-D seismic, drilling and well logging and core data, this study focuses on describing the depositional features of the Neogene Minghuazhen Formation shallow water delta in Huanghekou area (HHKA), Bohai offshore basin and discussing the evolution and controlling factors of shallow water delta sandbody. An obvious meandering fluvial delta system developed in sequence 1 (SQ1) of the Neogene in HHKA with thinner sandbody of distributary channels and poor development of mouth bar. The sequence texture obviously influences the vertical development and stacking pattern of sandbodies and controls the distribution of sandbodies in plain view as well. In shallow water lacustrine basins, relative topographic height difference leads to change of distribution of accommodation space, and sandbodies of distributary channels usually develop well in local low-lying areas where accommodation space increases. The delta is dominated by distributary channel sandbodies during the early period of base level rising. Sandbodies contact with each other in a lateral stacking pattern and are characterized by a fan shape in plain view. Distributary channels gradually narrow and tend to shift during the mid-late-period of base level rising, while the sandbodies are characterized by a net shape in plain view. During the period of base level slow falling, the multistory/multilateral channel sandbodies dominated the inner front of shallow-water delta and the delta sand dispersal distributes as a lobe shape.

The characteristics of petroliferous plays in subtle traps within a sequence stratigraphic framework in the Dongying Depression are investigated in this study. Sand bodies within lowstand systems tracts (LSTs) of sequences, comprising incisedchannel fills, sublacustrine fans, deltas in LSTs, controlled by syndepositional normal faults, and sand bodies within transgressive systems tracts (TSTs) to early highstand systems tracts (HSTs), consisting of beach bars, and turbidites, controlled by the prodelta slope, paleorelief, and syndepositional normal faults, are good subtle reservoirs. Mudstones and shale of deep lake subfacies in TSTs to early HSTs of sequences are source and cap rocks. Abnormal overpressure is the dominant dynamic factor for hydrocarbon migration from source rock to the subtle traps. Normal faults, sand bodies, and unconformities function as conduit systems. Sand bodies distributed in the abnormal overpressure source rocks within LSTs to early HSTs are petroliferous plays in lithologic traps. The petroliferous plays in stratigraphic traps are controlled by unconformities at margins of the Depression.
