Sequence and expression of the chicken calcitonin gene

Abstract: The avian calcitonin gene was isolated and sequenced; two mRNAs are expressed by tissue-specific alternate splicing. The peptides encoded by the mRNAs are the protein precursors of either calcitonin or calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Calcitonin is expressed predominantly in ultimobranchial bodies and CGRP in brain.

“…It also plays important roles in various brain functions in the motor, sensory and integrative systems [7]. In non-mammalian vertebrates, alternative splicing was also demonstrated generating two distinct transcripts for CT and CGRP, such as in the chicken, salmon and fugu [8,9,10]. In these groups, CT is synthesized in one organ, the ultimobranchial body [11], whereas CGRP is present in many tissues [3,12,13,14].…”

“…Calcitonin is a 32-amino-acid peptide hor mone that is synthesized by the parafollicular (C cells) of the thyroid gland and the ultimobranchial gland in mammals and nonmam malian vertebrates, respectively [Copp et al, 1962;Minvielle et al. 1987], The primary activity of calcitonin is to decrease circulating levels of calcium and phosphate by inhibiting bone resorption [Lenz et al.…”

“…This had been initially established in mammals (4)(5)(6) and chicken (7). More recently function of this complex transcription unit has also been demonstrated in salmon (8). We have observed mRNA coding for the two peptides, CT and CT gene-related peptide, in this species (9,10).…”
