The HVSR method applied to seismic noise can be a very useful technique to map the site effects of the territory, to identify the thickness of the soft covering and so the depth of the seismic bedrock. The case of the urban area of Oliveri is presented. Because of its high seismic hazard this area has been subject of first level seismic microzonation. The town lies on a large coastal plain made of mixed fluvial/marine sediments, overlapping a deformed substrate. In order to identify points on the area probably suffering of relevant site effects and to define a preliminary Vs subsurface model, 23 HVSR measurements were performed. A clustering technique of continuous signals has been used to optimize the calculation of the HVSR curves and 42 reliable peaks, in the frequency range 0.1-20 Hz, have been identified. A second clustering technique has been applied to the set of 42 vectors, containing coordinates, frequency and amplitude of each peak, to identify subsets attributed to the same seismic discontinuities. Three main clusters have been identified. The two characterized by lower frequencies have been considered in the HVSR data inversion, as stratigraphic peaks probably caused by the seismic bedrock. Finally, the morphology of the top of the seismic bedrock has been mapped. The deepening of the seismic bedrock below the mouth of the Elicona Torrent suggests the possible presence of a buried paleo-valley.

We examine how the decay of high‐frequency amplitudes of Fourier spectra of strong earthquake ground acceleration (described in seismological literature by the slope parameter κ $\kappa $) depends on the soil and geological site conditions at the recording stations in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Then, we introduce a Gedanken numerical experiment, in which we analyze nonlinear wave motion in shallow soil and show that it also leads to similar decay of the high‐frequency spectral amplitudes. The results of both of our studies are consistent with the interpretation that the decay of high‐frequency Fourier spectra of strong motion acceleration, described by κ $\kappa $, occurs at the recording site near the ground surface.

High-frequency attenuation of ground motions is commonly characterized by the κ parameter. κ and its value at zero distance, [Formula: see text], are critical parameters for site characterization, ground motion simulations, and adjustment of ground motion models for different site conditions. In this study, we derive regional κ models for Eastern, Western, and Northwestern Turkey, using a ground motion data set of 3212 strong ground motion records with 9636 components from 1053 earthquakes, recorded at 178 stations with varying site conditions. Initially, models with linear functional forms are derived with distance and site conditions as predictor variables. Residual analyses showed that these models have non-normal residuals with heterogeneous variances (heteroscedasticity). Box–Cox transformations on κ values are performed to address these two issues. Models using these transformations resulted in normal residuals with homogeneous variances (homoscedasticity). Effects of earthquake magnitude on the κ value are also investigated, and a linear adjustment for magnitudes is proposed. A constant vertical-to-horizontal ratio of 0.78 is proposed to estimate the vertical κ values instead of deriving separate models for the vertical component. This approach does not result in significant decreases in accuracy and is preferred due to its simplicity. Next, the physical implications of logarithmic transformations for the κ values are discussed. Finally, regional differences in κ models are highlighted.
