Separation of Resonant and Non-Resonant Components—Part I: Sound Reduction Index

Abstract: There is much interest in applying EN12354-1 to lightweight buildings elements which may have critical frequencies above the frequency range of interest. The standard requires that only the resonant component of the sound reduction index be used in the predictions and therefore a reliable method of calculating the resonant component is needed for these elements. Several methods of calculating the resonant component are examined in this study. It was found that the various predictions of the resonant component … Show more

“…The normal incidence mass law produced positive values from 250 to 5000 Hz. It should be noted that the results given here are different from the results given in Mahn and Pearse (2008b). An error in the calculation of the non-resonant radiation efficiency has been discovered and corrected (Mahn, 2010).…”

“…Below the critical frequency, the resonant sound transmission factor can be much smaller than the non-resonant sound transmission factor. Because of the measurement and prediction uncertainties, the calculated value can produce non-physical negative values (Mahn and Pearse, 2008b).…”

“…The elements were connected by a corner junction and the vibration transmission factors were measured according to the standard, EN10848-1. The resonant sound reduction index of the elements was calculated according to the theory of Leppington [12] which was shown to give good results in one study [13]. Since the elements were identical, it was assumed that and therefore the radiation efficiency terms were excluded from the calculations.…”
