Separation of Olefin/Paraffin Mixtures Using Zwitterionic Silver Complexes as Transport Carriers

Abstract: Zwitterionic silver nitrate salts of 1-(1-methyl-3-imidazolio)propane-3-sulfonate, 1-(1-methyl-1-pyrrolidinio)propane-3-sulfonate, and 1-(4-methyl-4-morpholio)propane-3-sulfonate have been prepared and tested as carriers for facilitated olefin transport membranes in the separation of ethylene/ethane, propylene/propane, and C4 mixtures. The interactions of olefins with silver ions bound to sulfonate groups were investigated by FTIR spectroscopy as well as the correlation between the binding affinity of olefins … Show more

“…Despite that, the patent production does not reflect the availability of large-scale commercial facilities, although it is true that pilot plants are currently under operation in different institutions, as recently reported by Dow Chemical. It is worth mentioning that the authors of patents filed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology are the same authors that published many of the Korean papers, which may indicate that this innovative activity is not necessarily connected with actual commercial manufacture of new membrane products [92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100]. “…The complexes between copper ions and alkenes are a noticeable issue in a number of significant application areas ranging from biochemistry [1][2][3] olefin-paraffin separations [4][5][6][7], advanced organic synthesis to several important catalytic processes [8,9]. Kinetic-thermodynamic considerations [10][11][12][13] supported by the spectroscopic and computational studies are still in the field of researchers interests due to tremendous importance of copper-ethene complexes.…”

“…Therefore we have synthesized L1 and L2 and explored their complexation reactions. The single crystal structures of L2 and complexes [Ag(L1)]ClO 4 (1) and [Ag(L1)]CF 3 SO 3 (2) have been solved. The complex of Ag(I) with L1 has two dimensional structure in which vinyl group has hapticity two, if perchlorate is counter anion.…”

“…The donor-accepter complexes of silver(I) formed with olefins have considerable potential for using in olefin/paraffin separations [1][2][3][4]. However, stable salt of tris(ethene)silver(I) cation ([Ag(g 2 -C 2 H 4 ) 3 ][Al{OC(CF 3 ) 3 } 4 ]) was reported [5] in 2003 only.…”
