Separation of Methane Emissions From Agricultural and Natural Gas Sources in the Colorado Front Range

Abstract: This proof‐of‐concept study demonstrates that methane (CH4) emissions from natural gas (NG) and agriculture can be disentangled using the concept of excess column observations. A network of cost‐effective sensors measured excess column‐averaged dry‐air mole fractions for CH4 (ΔXCH4), ethane (ΔXC2H6 as NG tracer), and ammonia (ΔXNH3 from agriculture) in the Denver‐Julesburg Basin during March 2015. ΔXCH4 varied up to 17 ppb and was >3 times higher with winds from directions where NG is produced. The ΔXCH4 varia… Show more

“…Reasons for the renewed rise since 2007 are debated. Increased anthropogenic emissions are likely to be part of the answer (Bousquet et al, 2006;Kirschke et al, 2013;Schwietzke et al, 2016;Nisbet et al, 2016;Helmig et al, 2016;Worden et al, 2017).…”

“…The retrieval of XCH 4 from the FTS measurements uses the software package PROFFIT (Hase et al, 2004), which is in 5 routine use for accurate trace gas retrievals from shortwave-infrared direct-sun absorption spectra (e.g., Gisi et al, 2012;Frey et al, 2015;Klappenbach et al, 2015;Chen et al, 2016;Butz et al, 2017;Frey et al, 2019). Quality filtering, based on the unmodulated (DC) part of the recorded interferograms, removes all measurements that are affected by unstable pointing conditions, e.g., due to intermittent thin clouds disturbing solar-tracking (e.g., Klappenbach et al, 2015).…”

“…The ethane to methane enhancement ratio has been used to characterize emissions from particular basins, and for scaling the VOCs flux to methane. In the DJB, natural gas on average has an ethane/methane molar ratio of 12-16% (ppb/ppb), equivalent to a 23-30% mass ratio [Peischl et al, 2018;Kille et al, 2019;Helmig et al, 2020], which is close to the estimated mean of all U.S. O&NG basin emissions [Helmig et al, 2016].…”
