Separation-Individuation Issues and Castration Anxiety: Their Curious Influence on the Epigenesis of Myopia

Abstract: This author suggests that myopia is related to psychogenic factors involving an unconscious representation of, and defense against tension. Further, the argument is made that such tension directly causes the extra-ocular muscles of the eyeball to tighten, ultimately creating the errors of refraction, which define the condition known as myopia. The author makes the case that the specific nature of the tension has to do with an interruption in the separation-individuation process that has occurred, in which the … Show more

“…On the contrary, Berg et al found no specific myopic personality [26]. Aspects of psychoanalysis in myopic patients published by Seitler underlined issues with separation fears and castration anxiety [27]. Regarding this and our findings, each improvement of myopic child psyche is essential.…”

“…Regarding how psychological factors are related to refractive errors, Seitler hypothesized that myopia is a result of a defense mechanism to tension that makes extraocular muscles tighten the eyeball, which directly causes refractive errors [28]. Furthermore, tension causes a break in the separation-individuation process in which myopic patients undergo separation anxiety that results with their sense of inability to cope with the world.…”

“…Furthermore, tension causes a break in the separation-individuation process in which myopic patients undergo separation anxiety that results with their sense of inability to cope with the world. Interestingly, the author noted that patients with myopia exhibit significantly higher levels of castration anxiety as compared with normal-sighted individuals [28]. …”

“…Although the incidences of both myopia and psychological illness have increased among adolescents in recent years, few studies are available on the relationship between them (Łazarczyk et al, 2016; Seitler, 2009; Ayaki et al, 2016). A review of the existing literature indicates that the current study is the first to our knowledge to examine the associations between adolescent anxiety and myopia and between adolescent depression and myopia.…”

“…Seitler hypothesized that myopia is the result of a defense mechanism against tension that makes the extraocular muscles around the eyeball tighten, which directly causes refractive errors. Furthermore, tension causes discontinuity in the separation‐individuation process and myopic patients undergo separation anxiety that results in a sense of inability to cope with the world (Seitler, 2009). It is also thought that myopic students wearing glasses felt victimized due to overt bullying at school.…”
