Separation and determination of anthraquinones in Cassia obtusifolia (Leguminosae) by micellar electrokinetic capillary electrophoresis

Abstract: An MEKC method was developed for the determination of the five pharmaceutically important anthraquinones: chrysophanol (1), physcion (2), emodin (3), aloe-emodinin (4), and rhein (5) in Cassia obtusifolia (Leguminosae). A buffer solution (pH 9.00) composed of 20 mM sodium borate, 20 mM sodium deoxycholate (DOC), and 15% ACN was found to be the most suitable electrolyte for this separation. Regression equations revealed linear relationships (correlation coefficients: 0.9993, 0.9992, 0.9996, 0.9989, and 0.9991) … Show more

“…Several analytical methods determining AQs in SC extracts have been reported. These include UV spectrophotometry, thin‐layer chromatography (TLC), high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE), with different detectors such as diode array detection (DAD) and mass spectrometry (MS) (Crawford et al , ; Jiang et al , ; Zhang et al , ). However, these methods only allow the quantitation of a few AQ components.…”

“…Several analytical methods such as thin-layer chromatography [28], micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography [29], capillary zone electrophoresis [30], capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (CE-MS) [31], gas chromatography [32], and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) [33] have been used for the determination of anthraquinones in various medicinal plants and natural products. In addition, analytical methods involving the use of HPLC [32][33][34][35][36] and liquid chromatographymass spectrometry (LC-MS) [37][38][39][40] have also been used for anthraquinone analysis in several natural products.…”
